Matthew Myers And Cardiff Devils Aim For Triple Crown This Weekend

Welsh forward Matthew Myers and his Cardiff Devils team-mates are out to complete a triple crown this weekend.

Devils have back-to-back home matches against Belfast Giants to complete the 2016-17 regular season and one victory will ensure they are Erhardt Conference champions for a second successive season.

They have already won the Elite League title plus Challenge Cup trophies and Myers says: “The Conference title is on the line this weekend and we hope for one, maybe two, wins.

“Belfast Giants will be pushing hard for the play-offs and they will come into our rink determined to show that.

“They beat us last time they were in our building and we will have to be at our best.”

Giants are second in the League table and would love to snatch the Conference championship away from the Welsh club, but would have to win with matches this weekend to do that.

Cardiff-born Myers has now won two League winners medals, the first with Nottingham Panthers, and played a key role in helping his home city team earn their first League championship in 20 years.

“Winning the League is fantastic,” said Myers. “Not many players get the opportunity to win trophies and I’ve been lucky enough to be part of a few winning teams.

“Every team in the league works so hard, week in-week out, to win and it’s incredible to come out on top.

“I didn’t realise it was 20 years since Devils last won the league and it’s amazing to achieve a landmark triumph.

“It was a shame we couldn’t make sure of the title at Ice Arena Wales, but hundreds of supporters made the trip to Sheffield last Saturday and it was great to see the IAW full when we were presented with the trophy.”

Devils won 6-2 at Sheffield Steelers and scored six goals again the following evening in a home win against Fife Flyers in front of a capacity attendance.

Both of Cardiff’s clashes with Belfast are certain to be 3,000-plus sell-outs.

Devils will turn to the end-of-season play-offs next week with the home leg of their quarter-final at Ice Arena Wales on Saturday, April 1 (7pm). They are guaranteed to be top seeds in the play-offs, but won’t know who they play until after this weekend’s fixtures.

It will be one of Dundee, Coventry and Manchester and the quarter-final will be played over two legs.
