Over 100 players will take part in this year’s Welsh Amateur Championship, to be held at the Jack Nicklaus designed Machynys Peninsula Golf Club.

David Wilson, championship manager for Wales Golf, said, “We are delighted to be able to bring the Welsh Amateur Championship to Machynys.

“This is without question one of the best championship courses in Wales and received exceptionally positive reviews when hosting the Seniors Home International Matches a couple of seasons ago.

“The quality of the course will provide an ideal test for all of the players in the stroke play qualifying rounds and should lend itself to some exciting matches when the top 32 players go through to the knockout phase of the championship.”

The top Welsh players will be present at Machynys including Tom Froom, Jake Hapgood and Ben Chamberlain, currently occupying the top three positions in the Welsh Order of Merit.

Nefyn’s Froom will enter the event full of confidence having already got victories in the Aberconwy and Trubshaw trophies this season.

They will be joined in the event by fellow Welsh international players including Tom Williams, Gaelen Trew and Matt Roberts.

Other recent winners taking part include Jacob Davies from Mold, winner of the Royal St David’s Gold Cross, and Whitchurch’s Paddy Mullins, winner of this year’s Tucker Trophy.

Archie Davies,Carlisle GC, will be looking to follow up his recent victory in the Irish Boys Open Championship.

Nick Daniels, Director of Golf, at Machynys said, “We look forward to welcoming all of the players to Machynys and are delighted to be able to extend our record of hosting top level events at our championship course.

“The course itself is in great condition and will provide a tough but fair test for the competitors.”

The stroke play qualifying starts on Monday 30th July with the match play section beginning on Wednesday 1st August culminating in the 36 hole final on the Friday of that week.

Visitors are welcome to watch some of the best amateur golfers in Wales compete to become the Welsh Amateur Champion for 2018.
