London Calling Again For ‘Headhunter’ Jones

Jade Jones is relishing returning to London where she struck Olympic gold when she helps lead Britain’s challenge at this month’s World Taekwondo Grand Prix.

The Flint born fighter competes at the Copper Box Arena looking to collect valuable rankings points as she also sets her sights on Tokyo 2020.

‘Headhunter’ Jones famously won the -57kg gold in London in 2012 and defended the title in Rio last year.

The 24-year-old said: “To be back fighting in London again will be just amazing. It will always feel special.

“Winning my first Olympics at just 19 was the best experience I have ever had in my life.

“I am sure it’s going to be great competing in front of a home crowd again. There is such a good vibe and it’s great to know people have your back.

“It’s our chance to shine and show people what we do behind closed doors. It’s a world class event and all the top people are coming.

“There are valuable ranking points for Tokyo 2020 and a bit of money is a bonus as well.”

Rising Welsh taekwondo ace Lauren Williams from Gwent will also be in action at the Grand Prix from October 20-22.

Jones will also be joined by flatmate Bianca Walkden who missed missed selection for London as she recovered from the first of two major knee operations.

The Liverpool fighter has since then won bronze in Rio and claimed two World titles – the one major medal to have so far eluded Jones.

“To perform in front of a home crowd, me and Jade love it,” says Walkden. “We are like show ponies deep down.

“All our friends and family can come who don’t usually get chance to see us though it does mean I hear my dad shouting across the hall ‘No mercy, no mercy.’”
