Lauren Price has vowed to give her all as she faces one of the biggest fights of her career at the World Championships in India. Lauren Price has vowed to give her all as she faces one of the biggest fights of her career at the World Championships in India.

Wales’ Commonwealth Games champ will face the No 1 seed, reigning European Champion and two-time world championship medallist, Nouchka Fontijin of Holland in Friday’s semi-final in New Delhi.

Price is already guaranteed a bronze medal – the only one the seven strong GB squad will collect at the event – after her victory in the 75kg category quarter-final on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old, who won bronze at this year’s European Championships, said: “I have got two days now, so I can prepare with the coaches for the semi-final.

‘I know that she is a very experienced opponent, but I have got belief in my ability and I am going to make sure I go out there and give it my all.”

Price won her middleweight quarter-final against Poland’s Elzbieta Wojcki of Poland with a clever display of counter-punching.

That allowed her to land the cleaner shots against her taller opponent to earn the split decision of the five judges at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex.

“I knew that my opponent would come forward, so the plan was to draw her in and use my speed to counter her,” added Price, who made history with her gold at the Games in Australia last April.

“The first round was close, but I think I really picked it up in the second and third and deserved the win. I am absolutely thrilled to win a medal – it has not really sunk in yet.”

Price’s semi-final on Friday will be in the evening session in New Delhi, which starts at 1030 GMT.

It will be streamed live via the BFI YouTube channel and can be viewed at https://www.gbboxing.org.uk/.
