Jones Will Succeed Simpson As Welsh Athletics National Coach

Chris Jones has been named as the new National Coach for Welsh Athletics.

Jones, who succeeds Scott Simpson, has over 20 years experience of high-level coaching and moves to the role after a spell as Wales’ National Endurance Manager.

“It’s been a privilege to work alongside Scott and the team at Welsh Athletics over the past three years and I’m excited to have the opportunity to continue the great work in developing coaches and athletes here in Wales, as we build towards 2022 and beyond,” said Jones.

“Our major focus going forward will be to invest in and support coaches at all levels in Wales; from club and regional coaches, to those working as personal coaches at the elite level, we aim to develop even closer links and greater clarity to support more of the fantastic young talent we have in Wales and prepare them to become world class athletes.”

Jones’ previous role before joining the Welsh set-up was as National Endurance Coach for Athletics Ireland. He had also held the role of Director of Performance for Triathlon Ireland from 2010-2012 and Head Coach for British Triathlon from 1999-2007.

“The quality of the short-listed applicants was exceptionally high and reflects the significance of the role in athletics,” said Chief Executive Matt Newman.

“The panel was unanimous in its decision and Welsh Athletics is excited about the appointment of Chris to this key role as we look to continue to develop athletes and coaches to perform at the highest level.

“Chris will start in the role of National Coach immediately and will provide direction and leadership to all areas of performance and coaching in Wales.

“2019 will see the start of a new chapter for athletics in Wales, with a focus on refining the existing structures to build a World Class Athlete Development system that ultimately develops medal winning performances across all event groups.

“Chris can now shape and implement the coach and athlete development strategy. As National Coach, Chris will work with the Senior Management team to build a high-performance culture, in tune with the values and objectives of Welsh Athletics.”
