Jones Taking No Risks With Rio On Horizon

Jade Jones will miss this week’s Taekwondo President’s Cup in Bonn rather than risk her knee injury just months before she defends her Olympic title.

The Flint-born fighter has already earned Britain a women’s -57Kg spot for the Rio Games this summer.

Jones is virtually guaranteed the slot this summer if fit as she bids to repeat her heroics from London four years ago.

The 23-year-old missed the Dutch Open last month due to the knee problem and was considering a comeback in Bonn this week.

But she is now set to return at the German Open later this month before competing at next month’s European Championships in Switzerland.

Speaking when she pulled out of the Dutch event, Jones admitted the Olympics was the sole focus.

Jones said: “It’s frustrating when you get little niggles but it’s better to be safe than sorry.

“The pinnacle is the Olympics, so it’s do or die for me. I’ll put every single thing I can into it and I really want to win.

“I want to be Olympic champion again and to be double Olympic champion would be amazing.”

Jones was just 19 when she sensationally beat China’s Yuzhuo Hou to win gold in London 2012.
