Joey Martin is Cardiff Devils captain. The Canadian forwarded, nicknamed the GOAT (Greatest of all-time) by fans), will wear the C for 2019-20.

This is the sixth season in Cardiff for the 31-year-old from Thorold, Ontario, who has been an alternate captain for the Devils since the 2016 and takes over the role following Jake Morissette’s retirement..

Martin has been voted a first team Elite League All-Star in each of his five seasons, winning EIHL Forward of the Year three times and twice picking up the EIHL Player of the Year.

The announcement was made by managing director Todd Kelman after Devils open training evening at the Viola Arena and Martin said: “It’s such an honour for me. An honour to wear Devils badge and I never take it for granted.

“To be nominated team captain is special and means a lot to me.

“I learned a lot from Jake (Morissette) and Marshy (Tyson Marsh) and I’m just so excited about the upcoming season. We have a really talented team this year and everyone is really motivated.

“The new guys have bought into the culture we’ve built here straightaway and we are just excited to get going.”

The Devils are in action for the first time this weekend against Fehervar AV19 from Hungary with back to back home games Saturday (7 pm) & Sunday (6 pm). Tickets can be booked HERE
