Jeremiah Azu And Emmanuella Kone Blast To Golden Treble In Sheffield

Welsh sprinters enjoyed a golden weekend at the England Athletics indoor age group championships in Sheffield.

Cardiff flyers Jeremiah Azu and Emmanuella Kone claimed three gold medals at the event which also saw Welsh youngsters excel over the middle distances and in the field.

Seventeen-year-old sprint star Azu completed the under-20 sprint double at the event formerly known as the AAA’s Championships, while Kone claimed the under-17 women’s title.

Azu, who recently won a bronze medal at the British Indoor Senior Championships, claimed the 60m sprint title on Saturday in a time of 6.73.

And he was in even more impressive form on Sunday when he blasted his way to the under-20 200m title in personal best time of 21.25.

Kone, who like Azu is coached by Helen James at Cardiff Athletics, also claimed a PB of 7.67 as she won the women’s under-17 60m final.

There was further success for the Cardiff club with Ben Reynolds chalking up yet another PB of 1:55.69 on his way to claiming gold in the under-17s 800m final.

Jeremiah Azu has been in blistering form during the indoor season.

One of the most impressive finishes of the day came in the men’s under-20 1500m where Newport’s Remi Adebiyi, clocked 25.1 for the final 200m as he took gold in a time of 3:58.67.

In the field events, Swansea athlete William Trott celebrated a personal best of 3.70m on his way to gold in the under-15 boys’ pole vault.

Cardiff’s Sarah Omoregie claimed silver in the under-20 women’s shot put with 14.54m, while Sale’s Nick Young took bronze in the under-20 men’s shot put with 16.60m.

Newport’s Remi Adebiyi won 1500m gold after storming finish.

Ella Wintle, of Pembrokeshire, took bronze in the under-15 women’s 300m with a new PB of 41.03 seconds, whilst Cardiff Archer Oliver Watkins jumped to a new lifetime best of 1.89m to win bronze in the u17 men’s high jump.
