Jenkinson Rises To Occasion In Macedonian Mountains

There were plenty of medals for Welsh athletes at the British Championships in Birmingham last weekend, but there was more success to shout about at the European Mountain Running Championships. Bronwen Jenkinson (12th) was the second British athlete home in the senior women’s race in Skopje, Macedonia, to help steer her team to a bronze medal behind France and the Czech Republic. Fellow Welsh athlete Heidi Davies was the fourth and final runner home in 35th.

There were plenty of medals for Welsh athletes at the British Championships in Birmingham last weekend, but there was more success to shout about at the European Mountain Running Championships.

Bronwen Jenkinson (12th) was the second British athlete home in the senior women’s race in Skopje, Macedonia, to help steer her team to a bronze medal behind France and the Czech Republic. Fellow Welsh athlete Heidi Davies was the fourth and final runner home in 35th.

It was a weekend of dominance for the British squads at the 17the running of the event with every athlete picking up a medal in either the individual or team races. Jenkinson and Davies were faced with two laps of 11km each and an ascent and descent of 700 metres on the Vodno mountain in the Balkans.

It was Jenkinson’s first British vest and the Eryri Harrier, currently studying at Leeds University, admitted to being delighted with her race.

“The relief when it was done made was enormous. I’m super happy with a 12th place finish, and team bronze, for my first senior vest,” she said.
