James Williams Tops The Podium At Welsh Athletics

James Williams has been confirmed as the chief executive officer of Welsh Athletics.

Williams was appointed interim CEO at the turn of the year after his predecessor, Matt Newman, left to concentrate on his role with Run 4 Wales.

Now, Williams, the former Cardiff Athletics and Welsh international middle distance athlete, has been awarded the post on a permanent basis.

Williams, who has led the sport’s governing body through the enormous challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic said: “I am delighted to become the permanent Chief Executive of Welsh Athletics.

“Despite the challenges that coronavirus has presented, I am very excited about what we could achieve across all aspects of the sport in Wales.”

All athletics activity has been suspended in Wales due to the pandemic, but the governing body has continued to support individual athletes and clubs combat hugely difficult circumstances.

“Despite the restrictions, our clubs have demonstrated superb innovation in the way they have engaged with their members – we are determined to support our clubs to return stronger than ever,” said Williams

“We have set out an ambitious strategy for the sport in Wales, and I look forward to working with my colleagues, our member clubs and our dedicated volunteers to bring that strategy to life.”

In an exclusive interview with Dai Sport earlier this year, Williams outlined his ambition to establish a long-term conveyor belt of talented Welsh athletes as part of an exciting seven-year strategy launched by Welsh Athletics.

Now he will get the opportunity to spearhead that strategy along with the sport’s return to normality thanks to the vote of confidence from the governing body.

Welsh Athletics chair Steve Perks said of the appointment, “James has proved his first class leadership qualities whilst undertaking the role as interim CEO for the last six months.

“During these most taxing of times, he has, with the support of  a strong team, provided clear decision making and communication, innovative activities and a strong ethos.

“The Board look forward to working with James and ensuring that Welsh Athletics goes from strength to strength.”
