James Tomlinson Throws Down The Gauntlet As Big Future Beckons

Wales is developing a highly promising group of young throwers who are starting to make their name on the international stage.

A youthful Welsh team took part in a four-nation competition against Spain, Portugal and Denmark at the Encontro Internacional Under-20 and Under-23 Throws Competition in Almada, Portugal, last weekend.

Leading the way was 18-year-old Pembrokeshire Harrier James Tomlinson who achieved a World Junior Championship qualifying distance in the men’s discus with a new personal best of 58.57m.

This came just a week after he threw a personal best of 57.96m in finishing fourth at the prestigious Halle Throws Meeting in Germany

Cardiff AAC’s Jac Palmer (22) took victory in the men’s hammer thanks to a personal best and new Welsh Under-23 record of 68.23m.

There was yet another personal best and Welsh Junior outdoor best in the men’s shot put, where 18-year-old Sale Harrier Nicholas Young finished second witha distance of 17.22m.

Meanwhile, Deeside AAC’s Amber Simpson (19) finished second in the women’s hammer with a throw of 56.68m.

While big brother Brett was scoring maximum points in the British League for Cardiff, 16-year-old Jay Morse was competing as a guest in an under-18 competition in Abrantes, Portugal.

The Cardiff AAC youngster threw a discus personal best and European Youth Qualifying standard of 57.44m.

Sixteen-year-old Neath Harrier Bethany Moule continued her fine form so far this season throwing 56.62m to finish second in the women’s javelin at the same event.
