Graham Wagg Wants New Deal . . . But It Won’t Be In Wales

Graham Wagg still believes he has a future in county level cricket, despite failing to agree a new deal at Glamorgan.

Wagg, 37, is the county’s longest-serving player but he has become the latest to leave after rejecting terms offered on a fresh contract.

After 10 years at Sophia Gardens, the all-rounder is looking for a rival county for next season and insisted: “I still have that burning desire to play cricket that I did all those years ago, and while I am sad to be leaving the club, it will always have a special place in my heart and I leave with nothing but positive feelings to Glamorgan.”

“The fans have been a truly special part of my time here, and the support they have shown me has been something I will never forget.”

So often the man who dug Glamorgan out of a hole, Wagg is the most high profile departure of the off-season after Kieran Bull, Owen Morgan, Connor Brown, and Craig Meschede, who was forced to retire through injury.

Wagg played in three out of five Bob Willis Trophy games and six of nine T20 matches in the truncated 2020 season and would have turned 38 at the start of next season.

He played 96 first-class games for the Welsh county, scoring nearly 4,000 runs with four centuries, including a double-century against Surrey at Guildford in 2015.

He also took 249 first-class wickets for the club, with four five-wicket hauls and a career-best 6/29 at The Oval in 2014.

Glamorgan’s director of cricket Mark Wallace said: “Graham’s wholehearted and passionate style have been a feature of his 10 years at the club making him popular with both players and supporters alike.

“He has influenced games for the club with both bat, ball and in the field and his timeless energy will certainly be missed both inside and outside the dressing room.

“Graham leaves the club with our best wishes for the future.”
