Geraint Thomas Faces Further Checks Before Giro d’Italia Decision

Geraint Thomas’ team will decide on Tuesday if he continues in the Giro d’Italia.

The 34-year-old had x-rays on Monday after a crash on stage three when he cycled over a water bottle in the neutral zone.

And though they revealed he had not broken any bones, he will be checked again on Tuesday morning to see if he can continue.

Ineos Grenadiers Doctor, Phil Riley, said: “Geraint crashed on his left side, so he took a significant blow to the back of his left hip and he has some abrasions on his left arm and leg.

“After the stage he was taken for x-rays at the finish.

“The initial x-rays didn’t show anything broken, but we are awaiting confirmation in the morning. We will treat him tonight, continue to monitor him and then review it in the morning again.”

Thomas finished well over 12 minutes after the stage winner on Mt Etna wrecking his hopes of winning the maglia rosa.

The 2018 Tour de France champ crashed when a loose bidon was caught in his front wheel s the riders cycled through Enna.

Thomas – favourite to win this year’s race – lost more than 11 minutes to his rivals.

It is the second time he has seen his Giro hopes wrecked by a freak accident.

Three years ago he suffered a crash after another rider swerved to avoid a marked police bike on the edge of the road.
