Georgia Davies Pleased With Bronze Over 100m Before 50m Bid

Georgia Davies was happy to end the year with another bronze medal as she finished third in the 100m backstroke at the FINA World Short Course Swimming Championships in China.

Davies – who also earned bronze for Wales earlier this year at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games – finished among the medals on the second day of competition in Hangzhou.

The European Champion tied for the third place podium position with Minna Atherton of Australia in a time of 56.74 in what was expected to be a hotly contested and close race.

The gold medal and new 2019 World short course champion was Olivia Smoliga of the USA, with the silver medal claimed by Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu.

“That was a strange final but I’m really pleased getting on the podium,” said Davies.

“It’s a really nice end to my 2018 cycle.”

Georgia On My Mind As Davies Breaks European Record

Davies also finished third in the event at the last edition of the World Short-course Championships in Canada two years ago.

Davies will return for her favoured 50m backstroke event on Friday.

Short-course swimming events are raced in 25m pools, unlike the Olympic and major world championships which are ‘long-course’ and raced in 50m pools.
