George Roars Into Rhiwbina Squash Final And Awaits Opponent

Leicester-born George Parker is through to the Rhiwbina PSA World Tour Tournament final in Cardiff.

Parker, 21, defeated top seed and fellow Englishmen Joshua Masters in his Welsh Open squash semi-final, winning 11-8, 11-9, 11-9.

He will play Welshman Peter Creed or Patrick Rooney (England) in Sunday’s final at Rhiwbina SRC. Creed and Rooney started their match on Saturday afternoon soon after Parker had progressed.

Former European under-19 champion Parker has played for England at every youth age level from under-13 upwards, winning English titles at u-15 and u-17 levels plus British championships at u-17 and u-19 levels.

Qualifier Parker started playing when he was four-years-old, but has hit problems over his on-court temperament. He is back playing after serving a suspension.

There is, though, no doubting Parker’s ability and he proved too strong for Masters, who had been number one seed for the $10,000 PSA tournament.

The hugely talented Parker has kept his emotions in  check throughout this tournament, beating three seeded players on his way to the final.

He won 11-4, 7-11, 11-9, 11-8 against six seed Jan Van Den Herrenwegen (Belgium) before beating number four rated Mahesh Mangaonkar (India) 6-11, 11-3, 11-3, 11-6.

The Rhiwbina event attracted players rated in the World’s top 100. Masters is at 60, while second seed Creed is ranked at 63.

Attendances have been excellent all week and the semi-finals have been sold out.
