Games Golden Duo Thomas And Davies Head Swim Wales Elite Squad

Commonwealth Games gold medallist Alys Thomas heads an all-star cast of 11 swimmers included in the Swim Wales National Senior Elite Squad for the 2018/19 season.

National Performance Director Ross Nicholas has named 114 swimmers and para-swimmers in seven talent groups as part of the Swim Wales National Squad Pathway.

The pathway is aimed at putting swimmers on the British Swimming pathway and achieving medal success at the major Games.

Another Commonwealth gold medalist, Georgia Davies, is also included in the top squad. She enjoyed a great summer, winning gold in the 50 metre backstroke and 4 x 100 medley relay at the European Championships.

“The 2017/18 season was a highly successful year on the international stage with significant medal success from Welsh swimmers at both the Commonwealth Games and European Championships,” said Nicholas.

“We hope that the programme activity in 2018/19 can contribute to continued international success and, at the same time, help our younger swimmers develop both their physical and mental skills as they progress as performance athletes.”

The Swim Wales National Squad Pathway is a four tiered squad system which is designed to provide progressive and appropriate training, education in relation to the development of World Class stroke technique and race skills, swimming specific physical and physiological development, winning psychological behaviours and performance lifestyle factors.

The four tiers of the pathway are (a) National Skills Academy and Para Skills Academy, (b) National Youth and Para Youth Development, (c) National Elite and Para Elite Development, (d) National Senior and Para Elite.
