Emyr Evans Beats Peter Creed As Welsh Pair Forced Into First Round Scrap

A late adjustment to the first round draw of the British National Squash Championships in Manchester led to an all-Wales battle between qualifier Emyr Evans and Peter Creed.

Evans won three games to reach the main draw for the first time in five attempts and was due to meet Scotland’s Greg Lobban, but when 3 / 4 seed Declan James pulled out with injury there was a re-shuffle and the two Welshmen were placed together.

A tremendously tight first game went to Evans 15-13 and he then took the second 11-4. It was obvious that Creed was struggling and no surprise when he retired before the third game to leave Evans a safe passage into the quarter-finals, where he will meet 3 / 4 seed from England, Daryl Selby.

The Evans v Creed contest lasted a mere 27 minutes and that was the same amount of time it took Wales No.1 Tesni Evans to get past Scotland’s Alison Thomson. The Commonwealth Games-bound Evans won in three straight games, 11-3, 11-7, 11-6 and will now meet England’s Jenny Duncalf in the quarter-finals.

If Evans can get past Duncalf she could well set-up a re-match with two-time champion and No.1 seed Laura Massaro in the semi-finals.
