Mimi Xu was beaten 6-3 6-3 by Emma Raducanu in the round one encounter between the pair at Wimbledon, although Raducanu had some classy words for the Swansea-born teenager after the match.

Emma Raducanu hailed Mimi Xu's talents following her first round victory over the Welsh teenager at Wimbledon.

Raducanu never looked back after breaking Xu's serve in the opening game of the match on Court One.

Xu - on her senior Grand Slam debut - held serve in the third game of the opening set to get on the scoreboard, although Raducanu was relatively untroubled as she took the opening set 6-3.

Raducanu overcame Xu's stubborn resistance again early on in the second set, although the duo traded numerous breaks in a further demonstration of Xu's ability to compete at the highest level.

But Raducanu's class told as she took the second set 6-3 to progress into the second round, although Raducanu reserved special praise for her opponent after the Wimbledon showdown.

"It's so difficult playing another Brit in the first round, I can't say that I was loving it," said British number one Raducanu.

"Mimi's a really dangerous player. She's so young. She's got some amazing weapons at her disposal so I'm really happy to have come through that."

Xu, 17, earned a wildcard entry into the prestigious event to become the first Welsh player in the event's singles main draw in 20 years.

Prior to the contest, Swansea-born Xu said she had nothing to lose against 2021 US Open champion Raducanu.

She takes home £66,000 in prize money having produced an admirable display at SW19.
