Chaz Davies survived a nervy moment to seal the runners-up spot in the World Superbikes Championship in Qatar.

The Powys-born flier came close to crashing out under the Losail floodlights in the final race of the season.

Davies somehow managed to stay upright as he was nearly high-sided on his Duacti bike which cost him the race lead.

But the 30-year-old wen to to finish second in the race and bag the runners-up spot after Kawasaki rival Tom Sykes crashed out.

It was Davies’ second runners-up spot of the final weekend and the second time in three years he has finished second in the championship standings to Jonathan Rea in the past three season.

Rea won the race by almost two seconds for his 16th win of a season and 54th of his career.

The three-time champ from Ulster also set a new points record of 556 beating the mark of 552 set by America Colin Edwards in 2002.

Davies, starting eighth on the grid, has swept into an early lead on the track where he bagged a double last year.

But his moment on lap three on his Aruba it Racing bike cost him the lead but not his bid for that second spot ahead of Rea’s team-mate.
