Charlotte Carey Beats Anna Hursey To Take Fifth Welsh Title

Charlotte Carey denied her Welsh Commonwealth Games teammate Anna Hursey a hat-trick of victories at the Aspire 2Be National Table Tennis Championships in Cardiff as the Welsh No.1 took the women’s singles title for a fifth time and completed her own treble.

Carey won her fourth crown in succession by proving too strong for sporting prodigy Hursey after the 12-year-old had already taken the cadets girls title (for under 15s) and U21 title.

In the senior final over the weekend event in Cardiff, Carey raced into a 3-0 lead, before Hursey hit-back to win the fourth game, 11-9.

But Carey – who also picked up the women’s doubles and mixed doubles titles – recovered to take the final set for a 4-1 triumph.

There was also a retained title triumph for defending men’s champion Callum Evans. The Welsh men’s No.1 beat Dean Cundy in straight sets – 11-2,11-8,11-5,11-9 – to win his third successive domestic crown.

Evans is now hoping to take his winning form with him to Portugal for this week’s U21 European Championships, while both Evans and Carey will represent Wales at next month’s World Championships in Budapest.

Hursey had won the cadet girls singles by beating Lara Whitton in the final, but was denied by Whitton in the junior (U18) competition as Whitton gained revenge in their semi-final.

Whitton went on to claim the junior title by beating Danielle Kelly in the final.

Cadet Girls Singles – Anna Hursey retained the title beating Lara Whitton in the final. Lara came through beating Sophie Barcsai whilst Anna beat Bethan Jones in the other half.

Cadet Boys Singles – Louie Evans won the Cadet Boys for the first time beating Rhys Hetherton in the final. Evan O’Connor played a great match vs Louie in the semis. The other semi was Oscar Marriott vs Rhys.

Junior Girls Doubles – Lara Whitton won her second title of the day, along with club mate Grace Clement. They beat Anna Hursey & Beth Richards in the final. Morgan Day Davies/Beth Jones and Lydia John/Danielle Kelly were semi finalists.

Junior Boys Doubles – Louie Evans & Joseph Roberts won the Boys doubles beating Cade Short & Benedict Watson in the final. Iestyn Howells/Ben Allen & Rhys Hetherton/Oscar Marriott made the semi final lineup.

Junior Boys Singles – Benedict Watson took the cup back home once again. This year he defeated club mate Cade Short in the final 11/6 in the final set. Joseph Roberts and Louie Evans reached the semi finals.

Junior Girls Singles – Lara Whitton lifted the cup with 2 great wins on the way. In the semi final she beat Anna Hursey and then Danielle Kelly in the final both 3/0. Beth Richards was the other player who made the last 4.

Mark Simon took the Over 50 singles beating Mark Farrow in a tight final

Dennis Bromage won the Over 70 singles beating Colin Price in the final

Disability Para Singles

Josh Stacey (Standing) & Cellan Hall (Wheelchair) were Gold medalists in the Para singles. Paul Karabardak & Rob Davies took Silver.
