- Cardiff Fire Goalie Lewis Called Up By Great Britain
Cardiff Fire netminder Lewis Davies has been called up by Great Britain for World Championship duty.
Teenager Lewis, from Barry, is in the GB squad preparing to compete in Tallin, Estonia.
The former Ysgol Bro Morgannwg pupil has been in outstanding form for National League Fire this season and earned his selection with a series of big performances.
His call-up to the GB team underlines the depth of goalkeeping talent in Cardiff.
Fellow Fire netminder Jordan Lawday, 19, is rated the best in his position and started for Britain in the World Under-20 Championships earlier this season.
Lewis is in the GB under-18 squad for the trip to Tallin where they will play hosts Estonia plus Australia, Lithuania and Poland.
The tournament runs from April 1 to April 7.
Lewis started watching ice hockey at the age of four when his brother, Owain, was playing and took up the sport two years later while he was a pupil at Ysgol St Curig.
Fire signed Lewis signed Lewis on a two-way deal which means he can play for their first and second teams.
He came through the Cardiff junior system, has been a regular within the South West conference systems and represented England in the Quebec tournament.
Lewis was also selected for GB at under-16 level and is now preparing for to play at the next age level.
“Lewis is a top prospect who wants to test himself and push himself to the next level,” says Fire coach Mark Cuddihy.
Fire are having a torrid time in National League South, the second tier of ice hockey in Britain below Elite League.
Cuddihy’s team certainly stand up for themselves, though, and have served more than 500 penalty minutes.
They are still without a win this season, but look to put that right when they take on Milton Keynes Thunder at Ice Arena Wales this evening (6.30pm).
