Welshman Peter Creed faces a Brazilian challenge at his home club Rhiwbina SRC this evening.

Caerphilly-born Creed, who plays out of the Rhiwbina club, is top seed at the Welsh Open, plays qualifier Vini Rodridgues in a first round clash.

Brazilian number one Rodrigues, born in Sao Borja and now based in London, defeated Owen Heyes (Wales) 3-0 and England’s Tom Walsh 3-1 to qualify for the main tournament.

Peter Creed (red shirt) is number one seed for the Welsh Open. The main draw first round is played tonight (Wednesday).

He is joined by fellow qualifiers Michael Harris (England), Miles Jenkins (England) and Lewis Walters (Jamaica).

Rodrigues, 31, has been a top five player in Brazil for more than a decade and is currently number one.

Creed, ranked at 55 in the World, is among the energetic and exciting players to watch on the PSA World Tour.

He trained under six-times British Open Champion Jonah Barrington earlier in his career.

Defending champion George Parker is second seed and plays England’s Jaymie Haycocks this evening.

England’s Patrick Rooney, runner-up in the first Welsh Open a year ago, is also competing.

Creed is joined in the first round by fellow Welshman Emyr Evans, the younger brother of Commonwealth Games bronze medalist Tesni.

Emery, based in Rhyl, plays Rooney in his opening game.

The Wales under-17 and under-15 teams are in Malmo, Sweden for the European Championships.

Andrew Evans is under-17 coach and his players are Lewis Poole, Sion Evans, Ryan Lewis, Layna Beattie and Georgie Lincoln. They are seeded number seven.

At under-15 level Nic Birt is coach and the players are Tate Harms, Rhys Evans, Dan Lewis Lucy Jones, Alyx Kelleher.

Their first matches are both on Thursday against Poland (11am UK time) and Finland (3pm UK time).
