England’s Luke Bishop won the Llantrisant Squash Open title, beating Welshman Greg Tippings in the final.

Bishop, a 26-year-old from Taunton, won a fiercely contested final which lasted 72 minutes.

Top seed Bishop overcame Lewis Poole 3-2 in his semi-final (7-11, 11-9, 11-4, 8-11, 11-5), while second seed Tippings won 9-11, 11-3, 11-9, 11-8 against Liam Eason.

That set up a crunch clash in the final and it proved an epic encounter. Tippings won the first and third games, but was edged out 7-11, 11-5, 10-12, 11-5, 11-7 during a final full of intensity and quality squash.

Llantristant SRC tweeted: “A superb squash display by both players, an absolute pleasure to have you at this years event! We hope you both can play again next year.”

Tippings, a full-time professional squash coach from Newport, is a former World top 100 player and he produced a battling performance against Bishop.

More than 70 players from 25 clubs competed in the Llantrisant Open over five groups.

Bishop won the A event – and the £250 first prize – while Gloucestershire’s Mark Toseland lifted the B title, beating David Roberts 3-1.

Toseland defeated Adrian Brace 11-9, 11-3, 12-10 in his semi-final, while Robertson won 11-9, 11-4, 11-9 against Corey Kearns in his last four clash.

In the final, Toseland won the title with a 5-11, 11-5, 12-10, 11-9 win and tweeted: “Happy as Larry to win the B final @LlanSquashClub graded tournament.

Olivia Stephens reached the E plate final, but lost against Nick Treharne.

“It was a fantastic event, exceptionally well run with a great bunch of people to socialise with. Thanks again and I’ll see you again next year.”

Steve White is C champion, Marco Perna emerged triumphant in the D event and Nick Treharne won the E title.
