Ann Hursey Gives Up Eight Years . . . But Only 18 Points In Crushing Win

Anna Hursey got her table tennis singles campaign off to a flying start with a crushing 4-0 defeat of Uganda’s Halima Nambozo. The 11-year-old Cardiff High School sensation was a picture of calm as she stepped up to demolish her 18-year-old rival 11-5, 11-4, 11-5, 11-4. In only conceding 18 points in the match, she made a statement ahead of her second match in Group 9.

The 11-year-old Cardiff High School sensation was a picture of calm as she stepped up to demolish her 18-year-old rival 11-5, 11-4, 11-5, 11-4. In only conceding 18 points in the match, she made a statement ahead of her second match in Group 9.

That will be against the 17-year-old Malaysian, Li Sian Alice Chang, who also beat Nambozo 4-0, but conceded 21 points. It will be a much tougher match for Hursey, who made her Commonwealth Games debut in the team event, but she could go through to the round of 32.

In Group 5, Chloe Thomas had no problem in beating Pakistan’s Fatima Khan 11-7, 11-3, 11-5, 11-4. She now faces Angelisa Freeman, of Saint Kitts and Nevis, who went down 4-1 to Khan.

Josh Stacey battled long and hard in the men’s singles before finally succumbing 3-2 to England’s Kim Daybell. Stacey hauled it back to 2-2 to send the game into a fifth and deciding game, but went down 11-6 in the end.
