Newport County manager Michael Flynn is hunting down free agents – and he needs to move fast. He needs a right-back before this Saturday’s SkyBet League Two trip to Mansfield Town because he has Dan Leadbitter and Ashley Baker out injured. “We think Dan has a bad hamstring tear so he could be out for […]
Darrell Clarke believes his Walsall players are in for a tough time against Newport County at Rodney Parade this evening (Tuesday). Former Salisbury City and Bristol Rovers manager Clarke, who took over from current Wrexham team boss Dean Keates at Walsall, says: “Newport have a really dodgy pitch if seeing it on TV is anything […]
Newport County took a century to make their first competitive visit to Wembley Stadium, but now they are within reach of a fifth appearance in eight years. Scott Bennett’s first half winner earned Newport a 1-0 win against Leicester City’s under-21 team a place in the leasing.com Trophy semi-finals against Salford City at home. Portsmouth […]
The Justin Edinburgh Stand at Leyton Orient – and a tight match between his former clubs – was a fitting tribute to the former Newport County boss, according to current Orient manager Ross Embleton. County fell to a 2-1 League Two defeat on Saturday, as a new stand at the Breyer Group Stadium was named after both club’s ex-boss, who died in June shortly after guiding the London club back into the Football League. The West Stand will now be known as the Justin Edinburgh Stand, and Edinburgh’s wife Kerri and children Charlie and Cydnie witnessed the unveiling, as well as a first home win in 10 attempts in all competitions for the O’s.
Newport County will go into their Leasing.com Trophy quarter-final on Tuesday night without the services of leading scorer Padraig Amond. The Irish striker picked up a bizarre injury taking off his boot in training the day before the 2-0 home win over League Two leaders Swindon Town at the weekend. “It’s nothing serious, he just felt his hip flexor when taking his boot off – the most bizarre thing ever,” admitted County boss Michael Flynn.
Ashley Barker is heading home to Wales to join Newport County from Sheffield Wednesday. The 23-year-old former Wales U21 defender is dropping down two divisions to get regular football after signing a deal that will keep him at Rodney Parade until at least the end of the 2021 season. “I enjoyed my time at Sheffield Wednesday, but it was time for me to move on. As soon as I found out there was interest, it was a no-brainer for me to come back home to Wales and accept this great opportunity,” said Barker.
Newport County have signed midfielder Dale Gorman from League Two rivals Leyton Orient on loan until the end of the season. The 23-year-old has played 17 matches for Orient this season, but has not figured since their 4-2 defeat to Forest Green Rovers in November. A Northern Ireland international at U21 level, Gorman began his league career with Stevenage in May 2015 after leaving hometown club, Letterkenny Rovers.
Newport County and Leyton Orient pay tribute to their former manager before they clash in SkyBet League Two action at Rodney Parade this afternoon. Edinburgh led both clubs to promotion from non-League football into League Two with Newport going up in 2013 and Orient last season before his death in June at the age of […]
Newport County are struggling and their manager, Michael Flynn, is at the centre of the storm, having been regarded for so long as the man who brought sunshine days to Rodney Parade. Chris Lomas followed County to Exeter City on Boxing Day to see a team – and a manager – blown further off course in League Two. He may be under fire from fans – with some of the more extreme elements suggesting online he should now be sacked – but Michael Flynn insists he can turn the tide at Newport County. Flynn – the man who saved the club from falling out of the Football League and who masterminded two epic FA Cup runs – is in the middle of his biggest crisis since entering management.
Penarth-born former Cardiff City and Wales player Alan Harrington has died at the age of 86. Harrington, who made more than 400 appearances during a one-club career (1951-1966), was one of the Bluebirds’ greatest-ever players. He is survived by his wife Gloria and daughters Judith and Rachel. Welshmen Alan Harrington and Alf Sherwood had a […]
Welshman Mark Sampson is intent inflicting more pain on manager Michael Flynn’s Newport County. Creigau-born Sampson, the former England women’s team manager, is now in charge at Stevenage FC, who play County at Rodney Parade on Saturday (3pm). Newport have suffered four successive SkyBet League Two defeats and badly need a home win against struggling […]
Michael Flynn didn’t pick himself to play against Brighton U21 at the Amex Stadium, but he should be proud of the team he did put out on the pitch for the second round tie in the Leasing.com Trophy. Four days after travelling to deepest, darkest Essex and pinching a 1-0 FA Cup win courtesy of a 91st minute goal from Padraig Amond, they struck even later on the south coast to go through to the third round 5-4 win on penalties, following a goalless draw. Shooting first, the County players held their nerves to beat former Team GB Olympic and England U21 goalkeeper Jason Steele with all five attempts:
