Last weekend, Azu brought a close to a blistering indoor season with a 60m win in the junior international match against England at Cardiff’s National Indoor Athletics Centre. But he puts his success over the past few weeks down to the disqualification he suffered at the same venue back in January.
Teenage sprint sensation Jeremiah Azu helped Wales produce a spectacular finish to the Under-20 Indoor Athletics International against England in Cardiff on Sunday. A strong and experienced England team had dominated proceedings for much of the afternoon as they set a number of individual and meeting records in the process.
Welsh Athletics has named a 34-strong team to take on England in an under-20 indoor international in Cardiff on Sunday. As well as the best young athletes from either side of the Severn Bridge going head to head, the meeting will feature guest senior athletes in selected events. The senior Welsh indoor 3,000m championships will also be staged during what promises to be an action packed afternoon at the National Indoor Athletics arena.
Welsh sprinters enjoyed a golden weekend at the England Athletics indoor age group championships in Sheffield. Cardiff flyers Jeremiah Azu and Emmanuella Kone claimed three gold medals at the event which also saw Welsh youngsters excel over the middle distances and in the field.

National coach Chris Jones has been in post since last October, following his predecessor Scott Simpson’s move to a senior coaching role at British Athletics.
Three Welsh athletes have been included in the Great Britain team for next month’s European Indoor Athletic Championships. Melissa Courtney, Owen Smith and Joe Brier have been named in a 48-strong squad for the event which starts in Glasgow on March 1. Middle distance star Courtney earned her place in the 3,000m by claiming a silver medal at last weekend’s British Championships.
Two of Wales’ brightest young athletes have been included in a world class line-up for the Muller Indoor Grand Prix in Birmingham this weekend. Cardiff AAC duo Jake Heyward and Jeremiah Azu will compete alongside more then 50 global medallists on Saturday. Ranked as the world’s number one indoor event, the Grand Prix will feature the likes of Rio 2016 double sprint gold medallist Elaine Thompson, of Jamaica and Greece’s world and Olympic pole vault champion Katerina Stefanidi at Arena Birmingham.
Melissa Courtney and Jeremiah Azu made it a medal-winning first day for Wales at the British Athletics Championship in Birmingham. Seventeen-year-old Azu earned bronze in the 60m, while Courtney went one better in the 3,000m as a number of Welsh athletes also qualified for finals and claimed personal best performances.
A drama filled day at the Welsh Athletics Championships saw disqualifications, a dead-heat and desperately narrow wins. The much anticipated women’s 60m final lived up to Its pre-race billing as Shannon Malone beat Wales Commonwealth Games sprinters Hannah Brier, of Swansea Harriers and Birchfield Harrier Mica Moore to claim the gold in another personal best time of 7.45.
Athletics fans heading to the Welsh Indoor Championships in Cardiff this weekend will enjoy the added bonus of seeing some of Europe’s top decathletes and heptathletes in action. The National Indoor Athletics Centre will host a combined events international match as well as the annual national indoor championships. A Great Britain team, featuring three-time Welsh Commonwealth Games competitor Ben Gregory, will take on France, Poland, Spain and the Czech Republic in an international match running alongside the domestic showdowns.
Wales saved the best until last with a spectacular win in the men’s 4x100m relay at the Manchester Athletics International on Wednesday night.
Joe Brier enjoyed a triumphant homecoming at the Welsh Athletics International in Swansea following his medal-winning performance at the World Junior Championships. Brier, who helped Great Britain to a 4x400m bronze medal in Finland, followed up that performance by winning the individual 400m at Swansea University’s Sport Campus.
