Wales’ fastest ever male and female sprinters are heading to the World Indoor Athletics Championships which start on St David’s Day. Jeremiah Azu and Hannah Brier have both been named in the Great Britain team to compete in next month’s event in Glasgow.

Jeremiah Azu claimed domestic gold in Birmingham on Saturday, but the Cardiff sprinter has his sights set on global glory this year. The 2022 British 100m champion added 60m gold to his growing medal collection at a sold out Microplus UK Athletics Indoor Championships. Victory secured Azu a place at next month’s World Indoor Athletics Championships in Glasgow.

Sprinter Sam Gordon will be among the Welsh international athletes taking part in the Welsh Senior Athletics Championships this weekend at the Leckwith Stadium in Cardiff. Reigning Welsh 100m champion Gordon aims to defend his crown against Josh Brown and Joseph Berry with Great Britain star Jeremiah Azu away competing in Europe as he prepares for the European U23 Championships in Finland next month.

Melissa Courtney-Bryant overtook the great Kirsty Wade to move into second place on the Welsh all-time 1500 mete rankings as she clocked a lifetime best of 4 min, 00.45 sec in winning at the Stanislas Meeting in Nancy, France on Sunday.

Welsh athletes experienced mixed fortunes at the European Indoor Athletics Championships in Istanbul. Melissa Courtney-Bryant led the way by winning Great Britain’s first medal of the championships on Friday evening when she claimed bronze in the 3,000m. However, sprinters Jeremiah Azu and Joe Brier, had to content themselves with sixth and fifth-placed finishes in the 60m and 4x400m events respectively.

Melissa Courtney-Bryant made sure she stayed out of trouble and expended as little energy as possible to reach the 3,000m final at the European Indoor Athletics Championships in Istanbul. Running in a slow second heat in Turkey on Thursday night, Courtney-Bryant had to keep her wits about her to stay out of trouble and eventually finish fourth to secure a place in Friday evening’s final. With a short turnaround between heats and final, the 2018 Welsh Commonwealth Games 1500m bronze medallist said afterwards: “I just wanted to do as little as possible today, we’ve only got 23 hours before the final.

Welsh stars Melissa Courtney-Bryant, Jeremiah Azu and Joe Brier are heading to next month’s European Indoor Athletics Championships in Turkey. All three have stories to tell behind their selection, with Courtney-Bryant continuing her return to full fitness after lengthy injuries and Brier recently completing his Masters. But it is perhaps Azu who has seen the most radical change to his life over the past few months.

British, European and world goals were gained by Welsh athletes at the UK Athletics Indoor Championships in Birmingham. Now, he is aiming to help add some extra punch to Welsh Athletics’ ambition to build on the success enjoyed by track and field in Wales.
