The Dragon Diary . . . What's on in Welsh Sport

The Dragon Diary

The Dragon Diary

For racing fans, the wait is finally over — the 2026 Cheltenham Festival has arrived.

Across four days, 28 races will decide which horses, jockeys and trainers secure their places in jump racing folklore in what promises to be a memorable week.

As anticipation builds toward the famous opening roar that greets the start of the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, the stage is set for potential Welsh glory.

Welsh jockeys Ben Jones and Sean Bowen will go head to head in Friday’s Cheltenham Gold Cup and both fancy their chances.

Jones will ride The Jukebox Man, owned by former Tottenham Hotspur boss Harry Redknapp.

Bowen will be on Haiti Couleurs for the Pembrokeshire-based Rebecca Curtis, who is bidding to become the first Welsh trainer to capture the Gold Cup since 1990, when Sirrell Griffiths struck with 100-1 outsider Norton’s Coin.

Let the mud and glory begin!
