Just Beautiful . . . Sheila Lewis Gets The Winners' Treatment As New Championship Could Be On The Way

A horse for Wales’ racing trainer-turned beauty salon owner was looking good on the track as another yard target a new championship. The Racing Post’s James Stevens reports.

A potential star emerged for one of the smallest yards in Wales as Lord Cauvelliere powered to victory on his racecourse debut at Stratford on Sunday.

He scooted clear by five-and-a-half lengths in the bumper, just a month after being purchased for £15,000 by Brecon-based Shelia Lewis.

Remarkably, Lewis runs a yard as well as a beauty salon in the town and her new addition certainly looks like an attractive prospect going forward.

Welsh jockey Callum Pritchard always looked confident when travelling from a prominent position and he put the race to bed in comfortable fashion.

That was a first success on the racecourse, although the four-year-old had won a point-to-point, beating the same horse, Eddie My Eagle, in second.

Lewis enjoyed her biggest winner a few years ago when stable star, Straw Fan Jack, won a novice chase at Cheltenham.

Bowens to feature in new championship

The Bowen family already has one champion in Sean but his brother Mickey could also look for a prize in the newly-formed summer jumps championships.

It is a new concept, only announced on Monday with a pot of £30,000 to be shared across the champion jockey, trainer, small trainer and owner.

Points start to be scored on Saturday and the competition runs until September 19.

Mickey Bowen has taken over from father Peter, one of the country’s best summer jumps trainers, and has already made a flying start to his training career after recording a fourth winner at Stratford on Sunday with All Inn Hand.

Sean Bowen, chasing a second full-season champion jockey title as well as a tally of 200 winners, already leads the standings with 19 winners.

His brother James is third with a tally of eight.

Fine week for Evans

Welsh Flat trainer David Evans is hitting form just before the summer after he trained three winners across the country in the last few days.

The trainer in Pandy, Monmouthshire, was victorious with Bust A Moon at Beverley, Rumba Bay at Salisbury, and with two-year-old Davvy at Redcar on Monday.

Evans has had some of his greatest moments through the summer months, most notably when training Rohaan to win at Royal Ascot in back-to-back years.

Stable star

Bumpy Evans, the horse on which Alan Johns finished his career in dream fashion with a winner at Ffos Las, has won again at another Welsh track.

Trained by Tim Vaughan in Cowbridge, he made all under new jockey David Noonan to complete a hat-trick at Bangor.

He has now won at two of the three racecourses in Wales with only Chepstow to go.
