The Welsh Government has confirmed “discussions are ongoing” to host one of Europe’s big three grand cycling tours. The news comes in the wake of Geraint Thomas’ Tour De France win and Wales successfully hosting the start of the Tour of Britain earlier this month.
Geraint Thomas will not line-up for Britain at the World Road Race Championships. The Tour de France champion admitted during last week’s Tour of Britain that that race would likely be his last of the season after a hectic and heady few months.
We’ve hosted the start, middle and finish of the Tour of Britain. We’ve produced Tour De France winners, multiple Olympic gold medal winners and World Champions. We have thousands of cycling enthusiasts pedalling up and down our roads every weekday and at least twice as many at weekends.
Scott Davies admits he is delighted with his Tour of Britain showing as he finished the race at top Brit. The Carmarthenshire rider was 12th overall – one minute 54 seconds down on winner Julian Alaphilippe after Sunday’s eighth and final stage.
Geraint Thomas has agreed a new three-year deal to stay with Team Sky until 2021. The Cardiff-born rider had been linked with other teams after becoming the first Welshman to win the Tour de France in July.
Scott Davies slipped out of the top 10 overall at the Tour of Britain after the Team Time Trial on Thursday. The Carmarthenshire rider dropped three places to 13th after his Team Dimension Data finished 12th on stage five.
Scott Davies kept his top 10 slot at the OVO Energy Tour of Britain despite losing his hold on the King of the Mountains battle. The Carmarthenshire rider saw the black jersey go to Team Dimension Data team-mate Nic Dlamini on stage four in Royal Leamington Spa.
Scott Davies moved into a top 10 place overall on the OVO Energy Tour of Britain as he retained his King of the Mountains jersey. The Carmarthenshire rider moved up one place to 10th after finishing 27th on stage three in Bristol in the same time as stage winner Julian Alaphilippe.
Scott Davies was rewarded for a brave ride on the second stage of the OVO Energy Tour of Britain as he took the King of the Mountains jersey. The Carmarthenshire rider was part of a five man breakaway from which he made a solo bid for the stage win when it was reduced to three riders.
It won’t just be Geraint Thomas who will feel very much at home when the OVO Tour of Britain kicks-off with a Grand Depart in Carmarthenshire on Sunday. The Tour de France winner will be joined by Chris Froome in the Team Sky squad that will launch their bid for yet another major title when the eight stage event starts this weekend. Thomas’s father, Howell, hails from Bancyfelin, just 20 miles away from the race start at Pembrey Country Park.
Luke Rowe has been forced to bring his season to a premature end after breaking a wrist bone at the European Championships in Glasgow. The Team Sky rider suffered the injury during the road race on August 12 after clipping his hand on a barrier.
Geraint Thomas has been named on the Great Britain long list for the UCI Road World Championships in Innsbruck next month. Wales’ Tour de France champion and Chris Froome – who, between them, hold all three Grand Tour titles – are on the longlist for both the men’s road race and the time trial. The road race squad also includes twins Simon and Adam Yates and British national champion Connor Swift.
