By David Williams Connor Roberts believes he has given Burnley a fighting chance of Premier League survival after his goal set the club on their way to a vital win against Southampton. The Wales defender’s superb strike inspired a crucial 2-0 victory against Southampton on Thursday night. The Clarets won for the first time since […]
By Tom Prosser The power of football helped build the Red Wall in Wales, but it can also move mountains. Just ask Barry Town United coach Chloe McBratney, who believes the same sport that has taken Wales fans to the threshold of a first World Cup finals is also helping her fulfil her coaching ambitions. […]
By Paul Jones Nathan Jones insists he is determined to lead Luton Town into the Premier League – but does not rule out the possibility of one day managing in Wales. The Hatters boss has produced one of the more remarkable Championship stories of the season in taking a club with a tiny budget and […]
Steve Morison has promised a major overhaul at Cardiff City and the recruitment of players he says “understand the game.” The Cardiff manager has vowed to re-build his squad after pulling the club away from the Championship relegation zone, but failing to find regular consistency. That was highlighted by the club’s latest defeat – a 1-0 home defeat to Luton Town – which made it 12 home defeats for the Bluebirds this season, the joint highest in the Championship along with Hull.
By Matthew Burgess Former Welsh Premier League champions Barry Town face the prospect of relegation after defeats over the Bank Holiday weekend left the club mathematically relegated. Barry were condemned to a bottom-two finish after losing to Haverfordwest County and Aberystwyth Town. Steffan Davies’ fourth-minute header was enough for Aberystwyth to ensure survival at the […]
Gareth Bale is counting down the days to the end of his time at Real Madrid – and he doesn’t have many to go. What next? Stuart Taylor believes the Cardiff City option makes sense, especially if you’re a Wales fan, but maybe less so if you’re his agent on a large commission. Why is Wales superstar Gareth Bale still being linked with a move to the Championship and Cardiff City in the summer? Well, for a start his Real Madrid nightmare will draw to a close in a few weeks’ time, as his current contract expires, and despite being touted as a target for any number of clubs, nothing has yet been agreed.
James Rowberry has admitted his Newport County side must go to Sutton United on Easter Monday and get something to revive their flagging promotion bid. Having lost for a third time in a row at Rodney Parade, the County boss is hoping the club’s recent away record can continue to help them get back into the play-off places. Sutton are one place and one point above County and have a game in hand.
By Jared Evitts Rob Page has finally got the chance to run the rule over potential World Cup play-off final rivals Ukraine this summer thanks to a decision to allow the top footballers in the under-siege nation to go on a tour of some of Europe’s top clubs. Wales are scheduled to play either Scotland […]
By Harry Corish Wales continued their World Cup qualification push with a disciplined 3-0 win against a resolute Kazakhstan team. Natasha Harding made her 100th cap in Astana but remains focused on helping Wales in their pursuit to reach the World Cup. While it was an emotional moment for the Wales veteran, Harding insisted that […]
By Dan Parker While promotion to the Premier League is still a long shot for Swansea City – despite their current revival – it’s very much a strong possibility for two Welshmen at Nottingham Forest. Steve Cooper and Brennan Johnson have both been integral to the club’s transformation, as Daniel Parker reports. During his two-year tenure at […]
By Harry Corish Russell Martin has insisted he will not be rushed into any quick sale of Swansea City’s leading marksman Joel Piroe. Swansea head coach Martin has admitted there is likely to be plenty of interest in Piroe after the Dutch striker’s hugely impressive debut season at the club. The 22-year-old has already been […]
Natasha Harding is set to win her 100th cap for Wales on Tuesday afternoon to write the latest chapter in an astonishing 14-year story. The Wales striker will reach three figures if she makes an appearance against Kazakhstan, in what is a crucial game for Wales in their World Cup qualifying campaign. Harding made her Wales debut against Switzerland as a 19-year-old way back in 2008.
By David Williams Joel Piroe is determined to keep scoring and provide Swansea City with the goals that might spark a late charge for promotion to the Premier League. The Dutch striker scored his 20th goal of the season in his club’s 2-1 victory over Derby County at the weekend, which earned the Swans their third […]
There’s a Welshman at the top of the League Two table who looks well placed to win a title and promotion. Rob Edwards pulled up few trees as an international player, though his managerial career is echoing the quiet success he achieved as a club player, as Daniel Parker reports. Of the 21 players handed their first cap by Mark Hughes in his tenure as Wales boss from 1999 to 2004, fewer than 10 would go on to win 30 or more caps. While a handful of Hughes’ debutants progressed to become stars in a red jersey – Danny Gabbidon, Simon Davies, Robert Earnshaw and James Collins – the majority were international émigrés by the end of the decade.
Wayne Rooney has urged Wales manager Rob Page to “get over” any personal history with Tom Lawrence and recall Derby County’s captain. Lawrence has not played for Wales for almost a year since Page left him out of the squad for last summer’s delayed Euro finals. Derby manager Rooney – whose team, including Lawrence, lost 2-1 at Swansea City on Saturday – has claimed the omission of the 28-year-old could be down to “history” between player and current caretaker boss.
Steve Morison applauded his Cardiff City players after he admitted they had restored his energy following what he described as “an emotionally draining week.” Morison saw his team come from behind to win 2-1 at Reading and go some way to erasing the immediate memory of their 4-0 derby day humiliation at home to Swansea City seven days before. Striker Lucas Joao put the Royals ahead in the seventh minute when he nodded home an Andy Yiadom cross at the far post.
Swansea City head coach Russell Martin is bracing himself for a summer spent fighting off interest for the club’s 20-goal striker Joel Piroe. The Dutchman scored two stunning goals in his side’s 2-1 victory over Derby County on Saturday to become the first Swans player since Oli McBurnie three years ago to reach 20 goals in all competitions in a season. The 22-year-old joined the Swans for a bargain £1m from PSV Eindhoven last summer, but already looks worth 10 times that figure after a stunning debut season in the Championship.
Steve Morison is hoping ‘the curse’ of the Manager of the Month award came early for him as he looks to move on from the derby double defeat last weekend. The fledgling Bluebirds boss was awarded the March award as Championship manager of the month earlier this week after masterminding 10 points for his club in March. Then came the crushing blow last weekend of a 4-0 home defeat to arch-rivals Swansea City that enabled them to become the first team in 110 years to complete a league double in the south Wales derby.
Swansea City have set themselves a new target a week on from making history in the south Wales derby – winning three games in a week for the first time under Russell Martin. The 4-0 win at Cardiff City Stadium last weekend allowed Martin’s men to claim the first league double in 110 years of trying by both teams in the derby, while Joel Piroe’s 18th goal of the season in the 1-0 win at Millwall earlier in the week made it 10 points out of the last 12 as they push for a top half finish. That is bad news for Wayne Rooney’s Derby County, who are still fighting to try to complete their own version of the ‘Great Escape’ and avoid relegation.
Wales manager Gemma Grainger says her team will take the positives from a resilient performance in a tight 2-1 defeat against group leaders France and use them to fuel the remainder of their World Cup campaign. While the hosts conceded two sloppy goals, Grainger was upbeat about the performance insisting that the big nations now respect Wales. The coach was pleased her side showed they can compete against the top nations and really cause issues for some of the best players in the world.
