Wrexham have stepped up their summer recruitment and the man who joined them for a record fee reckons the momentum will continue.

Liberato Cacace says the Hollywood-fulled rise at Wrexham was too exciting to turn down, despite interest from other clubs.

The New Zealand international defender became one of the club’s marquee summer signings when he agreed a rumoured £2.16m deal earlier this week - which would be a club record if confirmed.

The 24-year-old left-back arrives from Italian side Empoli, signing a contract that ties him to The Racecourse until the summer of 2028.

After spending three years in Serie A and captaining New Zealand to OFC Nations Cup glory, Cacace insists Wrexham’s vision and momentum were the key factors in his decision to move to north Wales.

"I have always wanted to play in the UK and there's also the factor of what they are building at Wrexham," said Cacace.

"Everyone can see that and I wanted to be a part of that as well. And it's also the Championship. It all fitted into place and it's definitely the right move for me."

The former Wellington Phoenix defender had options following Empoli’s relegation from Italy’s top division, having just enjoyed his strongest season at club level with two goals and a series of consistent performances.

"It is not great when you are relegated but on a personal note, last season was my best season for Empoli in terms of goals and assists," he explained.

"We made the semi-final of the cup and I played every minute on the cup run.

"I was very pleased with my development. Over the last three years, I have definitely improved every season and I am just looking to continue from that.

"That did create a lot of interest, especially when I was looking to leave at the end of the season.

"There were offers but once Wrexham came to the table, this was where my heart was."

Despite being halfway around the world during negotiations, Cacace said the process was worth the wait.

"It's been a long process and it's also been difficult with the time-zone with the club being over in New Zealand," he said.

"But I am happy to get it over the line and I can't wait to meet everyone."

Cacace joins a Wrexham side that continues to capture headlines not just for its Hollywood ownership but also for its remarkable ascent up the football pyramid.

After back-to-back promotions, the club is now preparing for life in the Championship – and Cacace wants to contribute to their next chapter.

"I think Wrexham would appeal to any player with what they are creating here," he added.

"You can't shy away from that. The club is run well and it is a really family-orientated club."

His move marks another step in a journey that began in New Zealand with Wellington Phoenix before he moved to Belgium’s Sint-Truiden and then to Italy’s Empoli. Internationally, he was nominated for the Best Men's FIFA 11 after being named MVP at the 2024 OFC Nations Cup.

Cacace’s debut could come in one of Wrexham’s remaining pre-season fixtures, with Phil Parkinson’s side set to face Dutch top-flight club FC Groningen on August 2.

The friendly, held in Veendam, will not be open to visiting fans but will be streamed live on the club’s website.
