Graham Westley hailed a job well done as Newport County extended their unbeaten run to five games after holding leaders Doncaster Rovers
The goalless draw at Rodney Parade left the Exiles two points from safety before their relegation rivals played their games on Saturday.
But it was clearly a point gained from Westley’s point of view against a side which stretched their unbeaten run to 10 matches.
Westley said: “It is another point for us.
“I said to the lads that we were four unbeaten going into the game and if we came out of it five unbeaten I think it would be a job well done.
“That’s not to say we didn’t want to win the game but we knew they were a good side.
“You know the quality of player that the opposition has got – they’ve got lads who’ve got many a game at a higher level and that says everything about the team that they are.
“They’re position in the league tells you everything they are so we knew it was going to be a tough game.
“It was a bloody and a bloodied game and both sides competed furiously.
“It was a game of few chances, the defending was first class from both sides.
“That looked like a game between two teams in the top half of the table, not a top v bottom match.
“I think the draw was a fair result from two sides that really went hammer and tongs at it.”
David Pipe had County’s best chance after just two minutes but his header was tipped over visiting keeper Ian Lawlor.
Rovers manager Darren Ferguson had had his players training on the worst pitch he could find to get used to the Rodney Parade surface.
The league leaders gradually exerted some control but though they had a few shots did not create a really good scoring opportunity.
Westley handed a debut to French midfielder Maxime Blanchard following his release by Shamrock Rovers taking his tally to new players to 14.
The Exiles manager will hope results go their way over the weekend before they are next in action at home to Grimsby Town on Tuesday.
