The New Saints are Champions Again . . . But Barry Town United Will Take Some Forgetting

Champions again: The New Saints F.C. had another message to send out.

Champions again: The New Saints F.C. had another message to send out.

Two games – three days apart – showed the very best of Welsh domestic football, as Ian Mitchelmore reports.

The New Saints underlined their iron grip on the JD Cymru Premier by sealing a record-extending 18th league title with a dramatic 2-1 victory over nearest rivals Connah’s Quay Nomads on Tuesday night.

If there were any lingering doubts about who rules Welsh domestic football, they were emphatically extinguished at the Essity Stadium as Craig Harrison’s side once again demonstrated why this competition has so often been their personal property.

TNS have set the standard for more than a decade and this latest triumph – their fifth consecutive championship – was secured with five matches still to play.

It is dominance measured in relentless consistency.

The victory was also an emphatic response to last weekend’s disappointment, when TNS were beaten by Barry Town United in the Nathaniel MG Cup final.

Having grown accustomed to sweeping up domestic honours – including a clean sweep of trophies last season – Harrison’s squad showed there would be no lingering hangover from that setback.

Instead, they delivered the perfect riposte, bouncing back within days to reaffirm their supremacy in the league.

The champions did not have it all their own way on the night. Ben Wilson’s opener looked to have put them on course for a routine coronation, only for Harry Franklin to respond swiftly for the Nomads and momentarily delay the celebrations.

For a spell, it seemed the title party might have to wait. But champions find a way, and in the fourth minute of stoppage time Danny Davies ghosted in at the back post to apply a cool, decisive finish that sparked jubilant scenes among players and supporters alike.

It was a fittingly dramatic conclusion for a side that has made a habit of decisive moments.

While this campaign will not yield another treble – their defence of the JD Welsh Cup ended at the hands of Cardiff Met in the third round – the league title remains the ultimate barometer of excellence across a season.

And once again, TNS have proved untouchable.

Since the turn of 2026, they have strung together seven consecutive league victories, accelerating away from the chasing pack and leaving their challengers scrambling in their wake.

Connah’s Quay, among the few clubs to consistently test them in recent seasons, were once again left looking up at a side operating at a different level.

Eighteen titles now tell the story of sustained superiority. In a league they have come to define, The New Saints remain the benchmark – wounded briefly last weekend, but never weakened for long.

For the vast majority of 'neutral' Welsh domestic football followers, that Nathaniel MG Cup final conjured up a memorable David v Goliath storyline.

The New Saints were overwhelming favourites to claim a record-extending 12th success in the competition, but Barry Town United had other ideas.

Ieuan Owen was the star of the show at the DragonBet Stadium, netting twice - including a sublime effort from distance to seal victory in the final stages - to earn his side a 2-0 triumph over Harrison's outfit.

"He's (Owen) man-of-the-match by a country mile," said Barry's manager and director of football Steve Jenkins.

"He wants to learn, he's hungry and he's just a superb player to be around. But not just him, we've got a fantastic bunch of lads."

To his credit, Saints boss Harrison - whose side lost in the competition for the first time since being beaten by Connah’s Quay Nomads in August 2022 - was typically classy in defeat.

"We've been honest in the dressing room, too many players weren’t good enough tonight," he said.

"You can't come into a cup final or turn up to any game and have six, seven or maybe eight players not play to the best of their ability.

"We weren't good enough, especially in the first-half more than anything. Second-half, we obviously got done with the counter attack in the end.

"Congratulations to Barry, they deserved to win on the day."

Many will revel in the Saints' failure to add another trophy to their already extensive collection of silverware.

But avid lovers of the league, and football in general, will be only too happy to send their congratulations to a club that has had its share of agony of late.

The club's chairman Mark Barrett and midfielder Eliot Richards have both recently been diagnosed with cancer.

Club captain Callum Sainty also lost his father in January - typifying the scale of the heartache many of those connected to the Linnets have endured over recent months.

"It's hit us hard, but from the outside looking in, you wouldn't think it," said Jenkins.

Sainty himself noted the difficult nature of his side's run up to the cup final - watched by a 1,231-strong crowd in Bridgend.

"This club has been through a lot of things over the past three or four months away from football. But this club is unbelievable," he told Sgorio.

"As you can see here, there's so many people to support us and they follow us everywhere.

"We know the history of the club, we know where the club used to be - firing on all fronts and winning lots of trophies.

"I've been here a long time and you want to win things, but it's one thing wanting to win and then going on and winning things.

"The lads have been unbelievable all year and it's nothing more than we deserve."

Goalkeeper Joe Thomas conceded just once during the entirety of the club's glorious five-game cup run, with the clean sheet in the final being a clear standout for the 21-year-old.

Elsewhere, Owen understandably took plenty of plaudits as a result of his brace in the final.

But the sheer number of storylines to emerge from Barry's cup triumph goes some way to explaining why many will feel such a strong sense of satisfaction that the Nathaniel MG Cup trophy belongs to those at Jenner Park... for a year, at least.
