Swansea City are set to make their first move of the transfer window by bringing in 36-year-old defender Joel Ward.

The former Crystal Palace stalwart is closing in on a short-term deal until the end of the season.

Ward has been without a club since leaving Palace last summer, ending a 13-year association with the Premier League side where he became one of the most recognisable figures of their modern era.

Now, Swansea are poised to offer the veteran a route back into the game as head coach Vitor Matos looks to bolster his defensive options for the second half of the Championship campaign.

The Swans sit eight points clear of the relegation zone after winning three of their last five matches, easing immediate fears of a slide into League One.

However, Matos has been keen to add experience and cover at the back, and Ward is expected to provide competition at right-back for Josh Key while also offering depth across the centre of defence alongside Ben Cabango, Cameron Burgess, Kaelan Casey and Ricardo Santos.

Swansea are hopeful of completing the deal in time for Ward to be available for their FA Cup third-round tie against West Brom on Sunday, with the defender having spent the past six months searching for a new club.

Ward left Selhurst Park as a Palace icon, having made more than 360 appearances for the Eagles and becoming their record Premier League appearance holder.

Despite his status, his final season in south London proved frustrating, with the Hampshire-born defender restricted to just 83 minutes of first-team action before his contract expired.

His arrival would represent Swansea’s first senior signing of the window and a clear statement of intent as they look to stabilise their Championship status and build momentum through the second half of the season.

Alongside the incoming experience, Swansea have also confirmed movement at the other end of the age spectrum.

Under-21s left-back Sebastian Dabrowski has joined National League South side Chippenham Town on loan until June 30, 2026, subject to international clearance.

The 20-year-old links up with the Bluebirds, who finished 14th last season and are currently battling to retain their status in the division they were promoted to in 2017.

Polish-born Dabrowski has been with Swansea since under-nine level and signed his first professional contract in November 2022.

Last year, he committed his future to the club by agreeing terms through to the summer of 2027, with the option of an additional 12 months.
