Paul Mullin won't be featuring for Wrexham this season, but the striker has opened up on his first ever phone call with the club's co-owner Rob McElhenney.

Paul Mullin has revealed the full scale of the ambition of Wrexham's Hollywood owners after opening up on his first ever phone call with Rob McElhenney.

Mullin joined the north Wales side in 2021 from Cambridge United and swiftly became a pivotal figure under Phil Parkinson, scoring 110 goals across all competitions.

Wrexham have gone from strength-to-strength under McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, securing three successive promotions to reach the second tier Championship in just three years.

And Mullin has revealed that when speaking to McElhenney prior to joining the club, the It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia actor told him the club's aim was to reach the Championship within five years of their takeover.

"The owner Rob ends up ringing me and I got off the phone and said to my family 'I'm going to do it'," Mullin told the StillTalkingShow.

"Just the way he talked. Basically, he outlined a plan on the phone to get to the Championship in five years.

"This is the fourth year, and we've just achieved it.

"I got off that phone call and I knew it (move to Wrexham) was the right thing to do.

"On the call at the time, he said 'I don't want to be shouting this from the rooftops at the moment because we're still in the National League and we've achieved nothing, but our plan is to be in the Championship in five years'.

"I just thought 'right, I'm going'. That was me, done."

Mullin was speaking prior to his loan switch to League One side Wigan Athletic.

The forward, 30, still has two years left to run on his deal with Wrexham, although he will now spend the duration of the upcoming season with the Latics.

And Mullin says he can be proud of achievements with Wrexham, regardless of whether or not he has represented the club on the pitch for the last time.

"You never know what the future's going to hold," he added.

"We (Wrexham) go up the leagues, we're going to need to sign players who are used to playing at that level, or even better than the level. We've done that all the way.

"If it means it is the end for some of us, so be it. Obviously it's tough to take after all we've achieved.

"It's just like to have the chance to go and perform there again this season.

"But if not, I've achieved so much, I'm so grateful for the owners up to now.

"It's been some ride, some achievement and probably set records that'll never be broken and we've made history many times over. I can be proud of what I've achieved."
