Wrexham have been handed one of the toughest starts possible to their Championship campaign, an away trip to Southampton, who were in the Premier League last season.

Wrexham’s long-awaited return to the Championship will begin in dramatic fashion with a high-profile clash away to Southampton on Saturday, August 9.

It will mark their first match in the second tier in over four decades.

The 12:30pm kick-off at St Mary's Stadium signals not just a new chapter, but a remarkable milestone for a club that has rocketed up from the National League to the Championship in just three years, powered by the momentum of successive promotions and the global spotlight brought by co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

It will also be the managerial debut for Will Still at Southampton, adding another layer of intrigue to a fixture that pits a newly promoted side against one recently relegated from the Premier League.

The excitement around Wrexham’s rise is palpable.

The North Wales club, transformed in stature and ambition since the takeover by their Hollywood backers, will now test themselves against battle-hardened Championship clubs throughout what is sure to be a testing campaign.

Their first home game in the Championship comes on Saturday, August 16, when West Bromwich Albion travel to the Stok Cae Ras.

That is followed by a home fixture against Sheffield Wednesday and a trip to Millwall, all before the international break.

The festive calendar will be a demanding one for Phil Parkinson’s men, as they host Sheffield United on Boxing Day and Preston North End three days later, then start the new year away at Blackburn Rovers.

Wrexham will also re-ignite a Welsh rivalry with a trip to Swansea on December 20, with the return game in North Wales scheduled for March 14.

They round off their Championship campaign away at Middlesbrough on Saturday, May 2 — the same day Swansea host newly promoted Charlton Athletic.

Elsewhere in Wales, the Swans will begin their eighth consecutive Championship season with a challenging trip to Middlesbrough on the same day Wrexham play Southampton.

Their first home match will see Sheffield United visit on 16 August, while their festive run features trips to Coventry and Oxford.

Cardiff City, now preparing for life in League One for the first time in 22 years, start their campaign a week earlier — hosting Peterborough United on Saturday, August 2 in a 12:30 kick-off.

They will travel to Port Vale the following weekend and see out the season away at Mansfield Town.

Newport County, meanwhile, begin their League Two schedule at home to Notts County on  August 2, with David Hughes taking charge for the first time.

They end their campaign with a long trip to Barrow.

Across the Championship, other opening-weekend highlights include Birmingham City — last season’s League One champions — hosting Ipswich Town under the lights at St Andrew’s on Friday,  August 8.

Relegated Leicester City begin their season a day later at home against Sheffield Wednesday in a Sunday afternoon clash.

Boxing Day in the Championship promises drama, with Wrexham welcoming Sheffield United, Birmingham hosting Derby, and Norwich entertaining Charlton.

On New Year’s Day, Wrexham are at Blackburn, while Leicester travel to Sheffield United and Southampton welcome Millwall.

The upcoming season sees the return of old rivalries and the chance for Welsh clubs to make their mark across three tiers of the Football League.

But it’s Wrexham’s Championship comeback that stands out — a club reborn, a fanbase reignited, and a story still unfolding.
