Jarrad Wright is set for a return to Merthyr Town’s starting line-up for their Southern League home match against Chesham United at Penydarren Park.

The Martyrs are second in  the Premier Division table and Wright, a versatile player who can operate in defence or midfield, will add an extra edge of power.

Wright looks likely to start with Eliot Richards still suffering with a hamstring injury.

Player-Manager Gavin Williams and former Cardiff City youth player Jaye Bowen, now back with the Martyrs, are both added to the squad.

The clash with Chesham at home (3pm) is the first of four successive Merthyr matches against teams in or around the Premier Division play-off places.

Merthyr are on a run of 10 games without defeat and are unbeaten in the League at home all season.

Visitors Chesham recently ended a sequence of 10 without defeat when they were surprisingly beaten 3-1 at lowly Cambridge City a fortnight ago, while they have since been beaten again. They lost 3-1 at leaders Chippenham Town in midweek.

Chesham are currently eighth and have two or more games in hand on the teams above them, but those are all away.

Their home form is as good as any in the division, but they have won only four away games all season. Chesham have the best goal difference of any side outside the top six with a tight defensive record of 32 goals conceded in 29 games.

Chesham’s leading scorer is Dave Pearce with 16 goals in all competitions, and they have three other players into double figures with Drew Roberts on 14, Ryan Blake and Sam Youngs with 10 each.

Their squad includes 44-year-old veteran striker and player-coach Barry Hayles, who has six goals from 13 appearances, plus former Cardiff City captain Darren Purse.

Merthyr’s away match at Chesham in October ended 1-1 when Kayne McLaggon’s goal was cancelled out by a late equaliser from Blake.

Edwards Coaches are sponsoring the match and matchball.
