It’s become a busy early summer for Swansea City, but their latest recruit, Cameron Burgess, could prove their best business so far.

Swansea City’s director of football Richard Montague believes the club has pulled off a major coup in landing defender Cameron Burgess from Ipswich Town.

Montague has described the Australian international as a "player of pedigree and experience" who will play a vital role in their Championship squad next season.

“There was considerable interest in Cameron from a number of clubs, and we are delighted he felt that Swansea City was the right choice for him,” said Montague.

“To bring in a player who has recently played Premier League football and been part of a successful period at his previous club is very positive.”

The 29-year-old, who will officially join on July 1, becomes Swansea’s fourth signing—and fifth addition—of a busy summer window, following the arrivals of Ricardo Santos, Zeidane Inoussa, Bobby Wales and Melker Widell.

But Montague made it clear that Burgess – who was out of contract at Portman Road - could prove the stand out, not just because of his track record, but for the balance he brings to a youthful squad.

Burgess joins the Swans after a spell at Ipswich, where he helped the Tractor Boys climb from League One to the Premier League.

Last season, he made 18 top-flight appearances and was instrumental in both of Ipswich’s victories over Swansea during the 2023–24 campaign in the Championship.

Now, Montague expects Burgess to help drive the standards Swansea are aiming for under new head coach Alan Sheehan.

“We are very pleased to have been able to add a player of Cameron’s pedigree and experience to our squad ahead of the new season,” Montague added.
Burgess has made over 300 league appearances across his career and was a key part of Australia’s qualification for the 2026 World Cup.

Born in Scotland and raised in Australia from the age of 11, he returned to the UK with Fulham at 15 and has since built a career across clubs including Scunthorpe United, Accrington Stanley, and ultimately Ipswich Town, where he racked up 120 appearances in all competitions.

Swans head coach Alan Sheehan said: “We are delighted that Cameron will be joining us.

“He is an experienced and consistent performer that has seen him rise up through the divisions in the last few years and become a full international.

“During our conversations Cameron really bought in to what we are trying to do at Swansea and I believe he will be a great addition for us on and off the pitch driving standards throughout the club, and we look forward to getting to work with him.”

The club’s global head of analytics and recruitment Adam Worth added: “Cameron arrives with us fresh from playing in the Premier League with Ipswich.

“We are excited to see what he can bring to Swansea City in the coming season and the years ahead.”
