It took a while to complete, but Swansea City believe the loan signing of Burnley’s Manuel Benson will prove worth the effort.

Swansea City head coach Alan Sheehan believes Manuel Benson can have a major impact on his side after the winger’s season-long loan from Burnley was finally confirmed.

The 28-year-old Belgian-born Angola international had looked unlikely to complete the move before the transfer deadline because of paperwork delays, but after a nervous 24-hour wait the deal was ratified.

Benson will now link up with the Swans for the remainder of the 2025-26 Championship campaign, wearing the number 21 shirt.

For Sheehan, who has overseen a major reshaping of his squad, Benson’s arrival is a statement addition.

“Manuel is a very exciting player who brings a lot of quality, energy and work-rate on and off the ball,” said Sheehan.

“He has Championship experience and has been a key performer at this level. We look forward to working with him and to Manuel making an impact in a Swansea shirt.”

That endorsement reflects both Benson’s pedigree and Swansea’s urgent need for attacking spark.

The winger, who can drift inside from the right flank onto his left foot, was a crucial figure in Burnley’s Championship-winning campaign of 2022-23, scoring 11 goals and providing three assists across 33 appearances.

His ability to influence games directly was instrumental in Vincent Kompany’s promotion push, yet he has since found himself sidelined at Turf Moor.

This season Benson has not featured for Burnley’s first team under Scott Parker, instead playing for the club’s under-21s.

He made just five senior appearances in 2024-25, two in cup competitions, though he did score in February’s 4-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday.

With first-team chances limited, a host of clubs expressed late interest in taking him on loan, including Celtic and Birmingham City.

But Swansea’s persistence ultimately secured his signature.

The move also follows an active window for Sheehan.

Striker Adam Idah arrived from Celtic on deadline day, while Chelsea prospect Ishe Samuels-Smith joined on a season-long loan.

Adding Benson, with his pace and direct style, gives Sheehan greater depth and options across the front line as Swansea look to strengthen their promotion ambitions.

Director of football Richard Montague said: “Manuel’s record shows he is a player who can make things happen, and we believe his speed and creative spark can be a real asset for Swansea City.

“He will add real dynamism to our play in the final third and we cannot wait for him to link up with his new teammates at Fairwood. Once we were aware this loan was a possibility we moved decisively to secure his services.”

Global head of analytics and recruitment Adam Worth, who had been monitoring Benson for months, added: “Manuel is a player we have been tracking over recent months, and we are delighted to have been able to bring him to Swansea City.

“He has excelled in the Championship and we hope he will now do so in a Swansea shirt.”

Born in Lokeren, Benson developed in Belgium’s youth system, coming through Anderlecht, Lierse and Genk before making his senior breakthrough at Lierse.

After spells with Royal Excel Mouscron and Royal Antwerp, he joined Burnley in 2022 under Kompany’s management.

He made 51 appearances for the Clarets in total, scoring 14 goals.

Eligible for Angola through his father, Benson has represented Belgium at youth level and won four senior caps for Angola since switching allegiance.
