Elfyn Evans’ hopes of a strong points-scoring finish on this weekend’s Rallye Monte-Carlo are over, after he crashed his Ford Fiesta WRC out of the event this morning. Co-driven by Scott Martin, the M-Sport Ford World Rally Team’s lead driver finished yesterday’s leg in a strong sixth position – just 29.8 seconds off a podium position. But Saturday morning didn’t start well, as Evans lost a minute on the day’s opening stage, the 18.53 mile Agnières-en-Dévoluy – Corps test (SS9), when a rear tyre delaminated, dropping him to seventh.
M-Sport Ford World Rally Team’s Elfyn Evans and Scott Martin continue to hold a strong sixth place after rolling the dice with a brave tyre choice this afternoon. With their EcoBoost-powered Ford Fiesta WRC less than 30 seconds adrift of the podium, Rallye Monte-Carlo is far from over and there remains all to play for. Taking four of Michelin’s Pilot Alpin Soft tyres and two studded tyres into the afternoon loop, the Evans knew that he would lose time on the first stage (SS6) – a long stretch of compacted ice demanding a cautious drive from the 30-year old Dolgellau star.
Matt Edwards will defend his British Rally Championship title with M-Sport this season. The 34-year-old has been confirmed by the Cumbria-based outfit as one of the drivers as it looks for a fourth straight BRC crown having proved dominant on the gravel and asphalt last year.
Elfyn Evans insists he can deal with the World Rally Championship pressure as he looks to make winning start in Monte Carlo. The Dolgellau-born ace will spearhead M-Sport’s challenge this year when the season gets underway in the French Alps. from January 24-27. The 14-round season is a crucial one for Evans who has been promoted to No 1 driver by the Cumbria-based outfit with six-time champ Sebastien Ogier moving to Citroen.
Elfyn Evans is aiming to get back to his winning ways this year, as he leads the M-Sport Ford World Rally Team as its number one driver in the 2019 FIA World Rally Championship. A poor start to the 2018 season saw the 30-year old Dolgellau driver having to play a supporting role to team-mate Sébastien Ogier in his successful quest for a sixth world title. But with the Frenchman now gone to rival team Citroën, Evans will lead the M-Sport assault – contesting all 14 rounds of the WRC, while less experienced team-mates share a second and third team car. Evans will also have a new co-driver this year, as Scott Martin – who has most recently co-driven for Irishman Craig Breen – replaces Dan Barritt.
Elfyn Evans will compete in next year’s World Rally Championship as his M-Sport team committed to the campaign. The Dolgellau-born driver’s career at the highest level of world rallying had been under a cloud with the Cumbria-based team battling to find the finances to compete.
Elfyn Evans finished the 2018 FIA World Rally Championship season off in style by finishing sixth on Rally Australia – underlining his ‘team-mate of the year’ status by helping Sébastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia win their sixth world title. The destiny of this year’s title was decided when rivals Thierry Neuville/Nicolas Gilsoul clipped a tree and retired their Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC on the final day. Ott Tänak/Martin Järveoja, who had an outside chance of winning the title, also crashed out of the event in their Toyota Yaris WRC.
Elfyn Evans has positioned himself perfectly between team-mate Sébastien Ogier and team rival Thierry Neuville after day two of Rally Australia – a situation which would give Ogier a sixth FIA World Rally Championship drivers’ title if the leaderboard was to remain the same after the third and final leg on Sunday. Driving brilliantly over the loose rainforest gravel roads of New South Wales, Evans and co-driver Dan Barritt continue to play a significant role in the outcome of the world title – being a huge help to Ogier and Julien Ingrassia and a proper thorn in the side to Neuville and Nicolas Gilsoul (Hyundai). Evans set an equal fastest and a second fastest time through the Raleigh stage in his M-Sport Ford Fiesta WRC to make sure he remained in seventh place – and crucially 30.6 seconds ahead of Neuville.
Elfyn Evans was faster than Sébastien Ogier on the opening day of Rally Australia, but yet again showed what a magnificent team-mate he truly is by easing off to allow the Frenchman to get ahead. Co-driven by Dan Barritt, Evans was eighth and Ogier 10th after SS5, before some quick and strategic calculations saw the Welshman, and indeed the third M-Sport Ford Fiesta WRC driven by Teemu Suninen, drop behind and put Ogier and his co-driver Julien Ingrassia up to what they hoped would be eighth. But when Ogier’s title rival Thierry Neuville lost time when a tyre came off a rim on his Hyundai after a jump on the same stage, the five-time world champion found himself in seventh. And, more importantly, some 30 seconds ahead of Neuville at the end of day one.
Elfyn Evans is aiming to end the 2018 FIA World Rally Championship on a high at next weekend’s Rally Australia, as the Dolgellau driver prepares to play the team game once again and do what he can to help Sébastien Ogier and M-Sport Ford win the drivers’ and manufacturers’ titles. Ogier, the reigning and five-time World Rally Champion, heads to Oz leading the drivers’ standings, just three points ahead of Thierry Neuville (Hyundai), with Ott Tänak (Toyota) third and still in with an outside chance of stealing the title. Evans has already helped Ogier this season, and he has the speed and ability to put himself between the title challengers in his EcoBoost-powered Fiesta WRC. And if he does that, and it’s the difference between Ogier winning a sixth title or not, he’ll be the undisputed unsung hero of the M-Sport Ford squad.
Elfyn Evans put an end to his recent bad luck by bagging a superb third place in Spain on the final stage. The Dolgellau-born driver claimed a podium finish by 0.5secs on the power stage 0f RallyRACC Catalunya – Rally de España after Thierry Neuville hit a rock.
Elfyn Evans is involved in a fierce scrap with all three podium places at the World Rally Championships in Spain up for grabs. The Dolgellau-born driver went into the final day in fourth spot having slipped from his overnight place of third at the RallyRACC Catalunya – Rally de España.
