Evans Poised For a Cliffhanger Finish In Corsica

Elfyn Evans is in a fantastic fight to win the Tour of Corsica, and has two stages on Sunday to overhaul Thierry Neuville, who stole the lead away from the Dolgellau ace on Saturday’s final stage. The two drivers are separated by just 4.5 seconds at the end of day two, after the Belgian stormed through SS12 to take 16 seconds off Evans and obliterate his 11.5 second advantage. But having led for seven out of the 12 stages, Evans knows that whilst he has a mighty fight on his hands tomorrow, his first World Rally Championship win since the 2017 Wales Rally GB is tantalisingly close.

Elfyn Leads After Fast And Furious First Day In Corsica

Elfyn Evans leads the Tour of Corsica tonight after a fast and furious opening day of competition on the sunny Mediterranean island. The 30-year old Dolgellau ace led after setting the fastest time on the opening stage, dropped to second for two stages and then bounced back to retake the lead with two stunning fastest times in the afternoon. The only drama was when the M-Sport Ford Fiesta WRC driver caught Kris Meeke on today’s sixth and final stage. The Ulsterman had started the stage with rear suspension damage on his Toyota Yaris WRC, and could do little to avoid delaying Evans when the flying Welshman caught him on a narrow and twisty Tarmac section.

Elfyn Ready For The Twist And Turns Of Corsica

Elfyn Evans heads into this weekend’s Tour of Corsica with a lot of confidence. It’s the event where he led a round of the FIA World Rally Championship for the first time, he’s always gone well there and it follows a podium finish in Mexico. At long last, things are most certainly looking up! Corsica is one of the most technical rounds of the WRC, as road condition and surface temperature change as the long stages twist and turn there way around the mountainous Mediterranean island. The event has a long history in the sport, and it’s gained the nickname of The Rally of 10,000 Corners for good reason. Maybe it’s driving the legendary Welsh rural mountain roads, like the Abergwesyn Pass, in his youth that has fine-tuned Evans’ asphalt driving technique, but whatever it is the 30-year old from Dolgellau has always been on top form in Corsica – finishing a career best second in 2015.

Evans Secures Third After Tough Battle In Mexico

Elfyn Evans has secured a podium finish on this weekend’s Rally Mexico, bringing his Ford Fiesta WRC home in third place. The result marks the eighth FIA World Rally Championship podium of Evans’ career, and his first alongside new co-driver Scott Martin. Rally Mexico is considered one of the toughest events in the FIA World Rally Championship, and Evans took that in his stride – not making a single mistake and delivering impressive pace and consistency throughout the weekend.

Evans Locked In Tight Battle For Second In Mexico

Elfyn Evans is locked in an intense battle near the front of Rally Mexico, with the M-Sport Ford World Rally Team driver holding second place with a 2.2 second advantage over Ott Tänak (Toyota) after Saturday’s action. Evans, co-driven by Scott Martin, has shown speed and consistency throughout the event in his Ford Fiesta WRC. Regularly posting top stage times, the Dolgellau ace has so far had the measure of this notoriously difficult event – only lucking out through the second pass of Otates (SS14) where the grip levels were particularly low. Geared up for Sunday’s final leg, Evans is on course to bring home some silverware and is determined to deliver the best possible result.

Evans Keeps A Cool (And Fast) Pace In The Mexican Heat

A cool, calm and clean approach has put Elfyn Evans in a very strong second position on Rally Mexico, after Friday’s hot and gruelling gravel stages. The M-Sport Ford World Rally Team driver is just 14.8 seconds behind leader Sébastien Ogier (Citroen C3 WRC) after the event’s first nine stages, as temperatures topped 31°C and crews climbed to an energy-sapping altitude of more than 2750 metres. Co-driven by Scott Martin, Evans wasn’t the quickest over the stages, but his consistently fast and clean approach in his Ford Fiesta WRC is paying dividends. With a day and a half of the event still to run, the tactic has put the 30-year old from Dolgellau very much in contention for victory.

Barcelona Test Prepares Evans For Rally Mexico

Elfyn Evans will be looking to show the speed of the M-Sport Ford World Rally Team’s Fiesta WRC on gravel when the FIA World Rally Championship ventures to next week’s Rally Mexico. The Dolgellau ace has twice finished fourth in Mexico, in 2014 and ’15, and wants to be in the fight for a top finish again this year. He and co-driver Scott Martin proved their speed with three stage wins in Sweden, and they’ll be ones to watch when the three day event starts in Leon next Friday (8 March).

Evans Kicking Himself Despite Fine Swedish Performance

By Paul Evans Elfyn Evans finished a very strong fifth on Rally Sweden, yet he admitted he was “kicking himself” after an early mistake cost him a podium position. The M-Sport Ford World Rally Team driver recorded three fastest stage times during the event and was quick throughout the four-day winter rally, although he could […]

Evans Flies In For A Podium Finish In Sweden

His hopes of victory on Rally Sweden might have slipped, but Elfyn Evans will be aiming for a podium finish on tomorrow’s final leg of the event. Yesterday’s magnificent performance could not be repeated, although it wasn’t for the want of trying on the difficult changing conditions – which once again saw just as much mud and gravel and the traditional ice and snow. Push as he might, Evans struggled to find a comfortable rhythm in his M-Sport Ford Fiesta WRC and finished the day in fifth position.

Evans Enjoys A Great Afternoon In The Sludge

Elfyn Evans could be leading Rally Sweden tonight, yet he is still very much in contention for victory after a sensational drive saw him bounce back from 11th to 4th place on the opening leg of the FIA World Rally Championship’s only true winter rally. A spin cost the 30-year old M-Sport team driver 30 seconds on the opening stage of the day (SS2), as tonight he trails the leader by 28.6 seconds. After an unassuming start, whatever Evans had for lunch worked – as he flew through the afternoon’s four stages, setting fastest time on two of them to rocket his Fiesta WRC up the leaderboard.

Evans Aims To Bounce Back On Amazing Rally Sweden

Elfyn Evans is hoping to bounce straight back after crashing out of the opening round of the 2019 FIA World Rally Championship by scoring a good result on the only winter round of the series, next week’s Rally Sweden (14-17 February). The 30-year old Dolgellau driver was unlucky to hit a patch of black ice on Rallye Monte-Carlo, which sent his M-Sport Ford World Rally Team Fiesta WRC hurtling into the undergrowth at high speed. But ice and snow are welcome at Rally Sweden, where studded tyres keep the cars on road on this, one of the fastest rounds of the WRC.

Evans Explains Unlucky High-Speed Monte Carlo Crash

A patch of black ice on a high-speed corner three miles into Saturday’s tenth stage caused Elfyn Evans to crash out of Rallye Monte-Carlo. Several other drivers had near misses at the same corner, but Evans wasn’t so lucky as the icy verge pulled his M-Sport Ford World Rally Team’s Fiesta WRC off the road, down a steep embankment and into the undergrowth – ripping a rear wheel clean off. Evans and new co-driver Scott Martin had been holding a very strong sixth place, and began Saturday’s stages just 29.8 seconds adrift of a podium position. But it was to be a cruel morning, with a minute lost with a puncture on SS9, before the rally ending crash on SS10.
