We Promote Our Own, Says Swans’ Steve Cooper . . . After Cardiff-Born Ben Cabango Earns His Derby Day Stripes

Ben Cabango and Ben Wilmot have been tipped to go from strength to strength after coming through their derby day examination. The Swansea City pair were the pillars on which Steve Cooper’s side built their resistance as they kept a clean sheet in the goalless draw at Cardiff City on Sunday. Cabango, 19, and 20-year-old Wilmot dealt with the aerial challenge of the home side and although the Bluebirds’ Callum Paterson hit the bar late on, they were not exposed as some had predicted before the game.

Four Men, Four Women, And Some Familiar Skills . . . Say Hello To Korfball

The South Wales football derby between Cardiff and Swansea wasn’t the only local sporting skirmish taking place in Leckwith at the weekend. Little more than a long throw away from the Cardiff City Stadium, two of Wales’ top korfball teams – Cardiff City & Met and Cardiff Raptors – were doing battle at the House of Sport, as Owen Morgan reports. Not familiar with korfball? Don’t worry, you’re probably not alone. But what the sport currently lacks in familiarity in this country, it certainly makes up for in action and entertainment. Saturday afternoon’s derby match at the House of Sport was played with all the enthusiasm, passion and rivalry displayed across the road the following day at the Cardiff City Stadium . . . and it had goals!

Will Vaulks is hoping to put six months of frustration behind him today by helping Cardiff City achieve derby day revenge. The Wales midfielder is desperate to be part of the Bluebirds’ line-up for the second South Wales dust-up of the season against Swansea City at the Cardiff City Stadium. Swansea beat Cardiff 1-0 in the reverse fixture at the Liberty Stadium in October last year, and despite the fixture being 108 years old there is still history to be made.

In Days Of Olde, When Knights Were Bold . . . And Swansea Played Cardiff Twice In Two Days

Jurgen Klopp may have a point about fixture congestion, but you wonder what the Liverpool manager might have made of the arrangements back in the Fifties. Looking down the record of matches between Cardiff City and Swansea Town, as they were then, their two clashes in Division Two in 1951 leap out of the record books. Why? Because they were played on consecutive days. Not only that, the first game was played at the Vetch Field on Christmas Day and the return was at Ninian Park on Boxing Day.
