The UEFA survey all but confirms that football is taking centre stage in Wales’ sporting theatre, with the recent result against Ukraine and the incredible atmosphere on Sunday night emphasising football’s new standing in the […]
By Harry Corish Wales’ Head Coach, Robert Page, insists he still has full confidence in Aaron Ramsey after the Welsh playmaker missed a crucial penalty in the Rangers Europa League final defeat against Eintracht Frankfurt. Neco Williams says it would be a “dream come true” for Wales to qualify for the 2022 World Cup and end their 64-year wait to grace the tournament. Wales host Austria in a World Cup play-off semi-final at the Cardiff City Stadium on Thursday. The winners will play Scotland or Ukraine in June to decide a World Cup place, something Wales have not experienced since reaching the quarter-finals of the competition in Sweden in 1958.
By Paul Jones Wales manager Robert Page has no fears over Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey’s limited game-time heading into World Cup play-off action and insisted “big players turn up for big games”. Skipper Bale and Ramsey head into the semi-final tie against Austria in Cardiff on March 24 following recent injury struggles. The 100-times capped Bale has only featured twice for Real since the end of August, with his only start coming against Villarreal in LaLiga last month, while Ramsey has started two games for Rangers following his January loan move from Juventus.
Aaron Ramsey should still be playing at Juventus, claims his former Wales teammate Joe Ledley. Ramsey completed a deadline day move from Turin to Glasgow on Monday where he will become the biggest name in Scottish football after signing on loan with Rangers until the end of the season. The Wales midfielder had been considered surplus to requirements by Juve, but his former Euro 2016 colleague Ledley – once of Celtic – reckons Ramsey should still be playing for the Italian giants rather than appearing in the Scottish Premiership.
By Paul Jones Aaron Ramsey stressed the importance of home advantage as Wales booked a World Cup play-off semi-final date in Cardiff Wales went into their final qualifier against Belgium needing a point to secure a home tie unless Turkey won their last game by four clear goals. Aaron Ramsey aims to replicate his greatest night in a Wales shirt when he faces Belgium on Tuesday evening – and put Wales a step closer to the World Cup finals. The Juventus midfielder says the Euro 2016 3-1 victory over the Belgians was “up there” alongside any of his 70 caps earned for his county. But Ramsey’s focus will be on the prospect of creating even greater memories if Wales can get the point they require to secure runners-up spot in their qualifying group at the Cardiff City Stadium.
Gareth Bale ruled out any injury fears as his 100th appearance for Wales in their 5-1 World Cup qualifying victory over Belarus ended after 45 minutes. Wales remain third in Group E, level on points with the Czech Republic who beat Belarus 2-0 in Kazan.
Robert Page has told his Wales players they need to be more ruthless if they are to fulfill their World Cup ambition. Wales face Estonia in Tallinn on Monday night, desperate to score the goals that will see them overtake the Czech Republic in the fight to secure a play-off spot in qualification for next year’s finals. Page’s side drew 2-2 with the Czechs in Prague on Friday, so still trail their rivals on goal difference, even though they have a game in hand.
Aaron Ramey has leapt to the defence of teammate Danny Ward after Wales earned a 2-2 draw against the Czech Republic in Friday’s World Cup qualifier. Wales fell 2-1 behind as goalkeeper Ward failed to control a back-pass and allowed the ball to go into his own net, but Daniel James scored a superb second-half equaliser – superbly crafted by substitute Harry Wilson – to earn a deserved share of the spoils. Ramsey, who netted Wales’ first strike of the night, heaped praise on Ward while also insisting that his team had secured a “great” result in in Group E.
