Paul Clement believes Swansea City fans would be right to celebrate Premier League survival if the club deliver it this weekend. The Swans head coach is taking nothing for granted but if his team win at Sunderland on Saturday and Hull City lose as Crystal Palace a day later, then a seventh season in the top flight will be guaranteed.
Kyle Bartley will return to Swansea City after his successful season-long loan at Leeds United. Bartley played 50 games for Leeds this term and captained the Championship side when skipper Liam Bridcutt was absent. The Things To Do List at Newport Gwent Dragons is a long one. But Robin Davey believes a new pitch and some players to set alongside Gavin Henson should be near the very top. The Dragons have been thrown a lifeline and they finally have a chance of making progress after years of failure on and off the field. You can bet, too, that Gavin Henson will be at the centre of it. Newport RFC shareholders voted on Tuesday night by a whopping 81% to accept the WRU’s offer to take over the stricken Rodney Parade operation.

It’s Year Zero . . . again. Regional rugby is being tried for the second time, but in a very different version, following the Welsh Rugby Union takeover of the Newport Gwent Dragons. Geraint Powell considers what the brave new world may look like. The shareholders of Newport RFC last night voted to ratify the conditional Welsh Rugby Union offer to takeover the Newport Gwent Dragons and of Rodney Parade. If truth be told, the overwhelming majority realised they had little choice in the matter. The alternative was far worse for Newport RFC, even on a best case scenario of how things might then unfold.
Wales head coach Warren Gatland is ‘pretty happy’ with the draw his side have been handed for the 2019 Rugby World Cup being held in Japan. Wales face a considerably kinder draw in the 2019 Rugby World Cup than what they received for the 2015 tournament, with Australia and Georgia being drawn to face Warren Gatland’s men in Pool D in Japan.
Welsh rugby chief Martyn Phillips has warned there will be no quick fix for the governing body owned Newport Gwent Dragons. The Welsh Rugby Union chief executive insists playing matters will take immediate priority at Rodney Parade, but says it will be two or three years before effective change takes root. The Dragons have mostly been the regular whipping boys among the four regions in the Guinness Pro12 and this season they even managed the unusual feat of splitting the two Italian sides to finish 11th in the table.
