It’s another trip down memory lane for Richard Thomas as he recalls the one that got away from Phil North in the year Glamorgan won the County Championship title, 20 years ago this summer. It might not have been a particularly defining match on the way to the 1997 County Championship title, but the annual visit to Colwyn Bay to play Nottinghamshire was incident-packed to say the least. The four days at Glamorgan’s north Wales outpost involved choppers, a lost TV remote control, and headline-grabbing player disciplinary problems.
Swansea City have rejected a second bid from Everton for playmaker Gylfi Sigurdsson. The Swans turned down an offer for the Iceland international believed to be worth £40million from the Toffees earlier this month. It is now thought Everton have tabled a new bid of around £40million with potential add-ons that could take a final package closer to £45million. That, however, remains short of Swansea’s valuation of the player and the Liberty Stadium outfit are thought to be holding out for £50million.
Welsh 1500 metre runner Jake Heyward struck gold in Italy at the weekend to help Great Britain equal their best ever haul at a European Junior Championships. The 18-year-old Cardiff AAC athlete upset the form book having gone into the European Under-20 Championships in Grosseto ranked 10th. Indeed, last year’s Carwyn James Young Sportsman of the Year had to settle for fourth place in his heat last Thursday behind teenage middle distance sensation Jakob Ingebrigsten, who was going for a hat-trick of titles at the championship.
Paul Clement insists Swansea City are fit and focussed ahead of the new Premier League season thanks to their tour of the USA. The Swans concluded their three-match trip with a 0-0 draw against North Carolina at the weekend, leaving them with a victory and two draws from their 10-day jaunt. Head coach Clement says the aim was to get his players fitter, tactically up to speed, and for established ones to gel with the new.
Welsh athletes served up some sterling performances to win two silver medals at the Commonwealth Youth Games in the Bahamas. Leading the way were throwers James Tomlinson and Sarah Omoregie who finished second in the discus and shot put, respectively. The boys discus was the first event of the athletics programme at the sixth edition of the Commonwealth Youth Games, but after just one round the competition had to be suspended for an hour due to a massive lightning storm.
Aled Davies believes his second gold medal at the World Para-athletics Championships has eclipsed his efforts in Rio last year. Davies smashed the world record on his way to a winning the F42 shot put in London on Saturday night. He threw a World Championships record of 16.02 metres in his first attempt and followed it up with a world record throw of 17.52m.
Welsh Premier Newtown left it late to see off Market Drayton Town on Saturday after a late winner from Ryan Kershaw kept alive their pre-season winning streak, as the Robins snatched a 3-2 win. Former-TNS man Kershaw scored from distance to settle the game – moments after their plucky visitors had forced their way back […]

Wales Women head coach Rowland Phillips believes his squad has all the ingredients to mount a serious assault on the 2017 Women’s Rugby World Cup. Former Wales back-rower Phillips cut his 50-woman training squad down to the 28 ahead of the daunting opener against the Black Ferns of New Zealand in Dublin on August 9. Carys Phillips continues as captain as Wales attempt to beat their best finish of fourth at a Women’s Rugby World Cup.
The weather was the only winner as the NatWest T20 Blast game between Glamorgan and the Sussex Sharks ended as a no result at The Swalec Stadium with just eight overs possible on a wet evening in Cardiff. The Welsh county are currently in fourth place in the table, whilst the Sharks – who defeated leaders Hampshire last night at the Ageas Bowl – are languishing in eighth.

The new season is looming at Cardiff City. But for many fans, it won’t seem the same without Peter Whittingham. Josh Thomas pays a personal tribute and gives thanks to the decade-long contribution of ‘Whitts’. It has been confirmed that after ten-and-a-half years at the club, 457 appearances, 96 goals and 93 assists, Peter Whittingham has said goodbye to Cardiff City. The midfielder has signed for Blackburn Rovers on a two-year deal. For me, personally, it’s farewell to a legend, an icon, and a hero to so many people.

Bryce Reddick joins Devils from Aalborg Pirates of the top league in Denmark where he racked up eight goals and 25 assists in 58 games last season. He led the Danish […]
Former Glamorgan batsman Wayne Law has thanked the Professional Cricketers Association Benevolent Fund for saving his life – twice coming to his aid when he was most in need. Law, who was released by Glamorgan at the end of the 2000 season after four years on the county’s staff, found himself in the Priory in Bristol after contemplating suicide when a long-term relationship broke up for the second time in 2016. The PCA Benevolent Fund originally helped Law in 2014 by making regular financial payments to help him get his life back on track after the initial break up and they stepped in again last year when Law hit rock bottom and was addicted to painkillers.

The 2017 Cardiff University/Cardiff Half Marathon is approaching a sell-out with the last of the 25,000 entries expected to go in the coming days. With just over 1,000 general entries remaining, those wanting to take-on the flat, fast and iconic course around the Welsh capital on October 1st are being urged to sign up now to avoid disappointment. Only 10 percent of the overall capacity remains after the event received unprecedented interest following the success of last year’s 13.1 mile race and IAAF/Cardiff University 2016 World Half Marathon Championships.
