Wales captain Ashley Williams is adamant the team’s momentum is changing ahead of their crucial final four World Cup Qualifying games. Wales are four points behind leaders Serbia and Republic of Ireland in Group D and host Austria on Saturday evening at the Cardiff City Stadium, knowing defeat will dent their claims of reaching Russia next summer. However, Williams, who has led Wales in all six of their qualifiers, believes the tide is turning in the favour of Chris Coleman’s side after their draw with Serbia in June – a result achieved without their regular inspiration Gareth Bale.
Robert Croft believes Glamorgan can keep their bandwagon rolling in Birmingham on Saturday – right up to the pick-up point for silverware. The county head into Finals Day on the back of three successive wins in the NatWest T20 Blast including a decisive victory against Leicestershire Foxes in the quarter-finals. Head coach Croft is determined they will approach the semi-final against Birmingham Bears at Edgbaston in exactly the same way as previous matches in the competition and is backing his players to deliver on the day.
Danny Wilson admitted his Cardiff Blues team got what they deserved after their opening Guinness Pro14 fixture ended in defeat. The Blues’ optimism from encouraging pre-season results was put sharply into context by Edinburgh who won comfortably, 20-10 at the Arms Park. There was even a dismissive slap in the face from the Scots’ new head coach Richard Cockerill, who claimed afterwards his squad had worked much harder in pre-season training than anything they were made to suffer from a limited Blues side.

Chris Coleman remains undaunted by the size of Wales’ World Cup task and admits he would not be bothered if they had to beat ‘Brazil, Spain and Germany’ to reach next summer’s finals in Russia. Wales are playing catch-up in Group D with four points to make up on the top two of Serbia and the Republic of Ireland. Coleman’s side have four games left to claw back that deficit – Austria and the Republic at home and Moldova and Georgia away.

In the last of the Guinness Pro 14 regional spotlights, we focus on the Dragons.
