NHL clubs Arizona Coyotes and San Jose Sharks both had a role in Tyson Strachan’s ice hockey journey from Phoenix to South Wales. Tough guy Strachan, who has 186 NHL matches for St. Louis Blues, Florida Panthers, Washington Capitals, Buffalo Sabres and Minnesota Wild, has signed for Cardiff Devils and makes his debut this weekend. […]
Alex Reid has returned to the Racecourse Ground for a second loan spell with Wrexham. The Fleetwood Town striker’s initial spell lasted 55 days until the victory over Eastleigh on October 22.
Canadian Mac Faulkner is flying into the UK on a special mission. The former Cardiff Devils captain will play a major role in Mark Richardson’s testimonial next week. “Mark is the gold standard when it comes to setting a goal and seeing it through,” says Faulkner.”He is a class act professional through and through – […]
Hyundai Motorsport will field a four-car entry into Wales Rally GB next week, the penultimate event in the 2017 FIA World Rally Championship (WRC), and the final round in Europe.
There was no golden return to the track for Elinor Barker, but there was still a silver lining in Berlin as she helped the British team pursuit team take second place at the UEC European Track Championships in Berlin. The defending champions from Italy rode off with the gold medal, while Barker, fellow Welsh rider Manon Lloyd, Katie Archibald and Emily Kay had to settle for the runners-up spot on the podium. They managed to go faster than in qualifying, but it wasn’t enough to catch the super-quick Italians.
Nathan Dyer still likes to joke that he sparked the flames that fired Leicester City to the most extraordinary title win in post-war football history. The Swansea City winger was on loan with the Foxes the season before last and scored the last-minute winner in a 3-2 September victory over Aston Villa. “I tell people I helped start the revolution!” says Dyer.
Rhys Webb has said he will not be withdrawing from his decision to join Toulon next season, meaning Wales will not be picking him. That has produced plenty of debate, but Geraint Powell argues the outpouring of anger only serves to show how divided the country has become between those who support only Wales and those who care for the regions. Whilst it is a matter of personal sadness for me – someone who has been called an “arch-regionalist” or more accurately an “arch-aligner” enough times on social media – few will have been surprised by some of the negative reaction against the revised criteria to the Welsh Rugby Union’s Senior Player Selection Policy (the “WRU SPSP”, the so-called, but terribly misnamed, “Gatland’s Law”). There is a brutal truth revealed by the reaction to this policy revision, perhaps fuelled by Rhys Webb being caught through his vague and most definitely in need of clarification agreement with Toulon, that many rugby fans in Wales care passionately about the Welsh national team and care very little for their professional region or any others.
What odds on an Ospreys win at Saracens this weekend? It’s a bit of a long-shot according to most bookies. On their return to the Champions Cup this season the Welsh region head to London to face the reigning champions in a game in which the home side are 1/25 on to win and you can get 20/1 on an Ospreys triumph.
Paul Clement insists Chelsea cannot reclaim Tammy Abraham to solve their own Premier League problems. The Swansea City manager has made it clear than Abraham can only be recalled under specific circumstances if he is cold-shouldered for selection at the Liberty Stadium. But with the England U21 striker having already made eight league appearances and scored four goals – including both in last week’s 2-0 win over Huddersfield – Clement says there is no chance of that happening.
Natasha Harding says Wales Women are targeting another three points from their World Cup qualifying tie in Russia on October 24. Wales opened their campaign with a 1-0 victory over Kazakhstan in September which leaves them second in Group A.
In theory, Kris Meeke arrives home for next weekend’s Dayinsure Wales Rally GB (26-29 October) on the crest of a wave after winning the previous round of this year’s pulsating FIA World Rally Championship earlier this month in Spain. But, in reality, this has been an erratic campaign for the 38-year-old Ulsterman from Dungannon who started the year as one of the title favourites.
Think race walking is for slow coaches? Think again. Try keeping up with Welsh No.1 Bethan Davies who can walk 5k in 21 minutes (her current British record). Owen Morgan met up with her as she strides towards April’s Commonwealth Games in Australia. With the Commonwealth Games now a shade under six months away, Welsh race walker Bethan Davies has just taken the first steps on the long journey towards her Gold Coast dream. As well as aiming for a medal winning performance when she gets there, she’s hoping to raise the profile of her sport along the way.
Paul Merson made his Welsh League debut and Caerau FC’s regular attendance multiplied by 10! The Maesteg club usually attract around 40 spectators for their Third Division fixtures, but with former Arsenal and England playmaker Merson in their starting line-up 400-plus people set a ground record crowd. Caerau FC had printed 300 match programmes and […]
The threat to Rhys Webb’s international future is self-defeating and was entirely avoidable, says Robin Davey. If the new national selection policy was well-intended, it has been poorly targeted at a player who deserved better. Why has Welsh rugby shot itself in the foot again when there was absolutely no need? Why have the powers that be decided to score an own goal, to mix my sports, by making an example of Rhys Webb?
Cardiff Devils have signed a tough, physical defenceman who will be in their team this weekend. Canadian enforcer Tyson Strachan flies into Cardiff on Thursday, is due to skate with his new team-mates on Friday and play at Sheffield Steelers on Saturday. Devils coach Andrew Lord played junior hockey alongside Strachan for Vernon Vipers during […]
Captain Eli King was among the Cardiff City players who stood out during the under-15 South Wales derby against Swansea City. King is a central midfield player with an eye for a pass who has played at under-18 level for the Bluebirds. Centre-half Harvey Miles caught the eye for the Swans in a Premier League […]
