Warren Gatland has named his Six Nations squad and will have fingers crossed this weekend as his players go into battle in Europe. Geraint Powell believes the squad reflects the impact of four key issues. The selection of any Welsh Test squad is always instructive of many of the key issues in Welsh rugby and the announcement this week of the 2018 Six Nations squad was no different. It was an extended squad of 39 players, given the current list of short-term injuries. There are four themes of particular note.

The Swansea City manager is desperate to hook some new recruits and is hopeful at least one player might take the bait before Monday’s crucial clash at home to Liverpool. Carvalhal has previously described his targets as “sardines” rather than “lobster” or “caviar” but as of Friday night he was still waiting for something to land in his net and the lack of a decent match is making him edgy.

Neil Warnock insists Cardiff City are still no more than underdogs for promotion to the Premier League. The Bluebirds may be only two points from second place – and seven clear of seventh spot, just beneath the play-offs – but their manager is still trying hard to lessen expectations on his squad. Four defeats in a row cast doubts on the Cardiff’s staying power, but the convincing 4-0 victory over Sunderland last week has not altered Warnock’s belief that his third-placed team will do well to finish sixth.

The FA Cup run has regenerated the club,” said Flynn, whose side are currently two points off the play-offs in 10th.
