Kris Cross Country Champion In Scotland. . . After 132-Year Wait

Kris Jones delivered himself an early birthday present as he wrote his name into the record books as the first Welshman to win the Scottish Cross Country title in 132 years with victory in Falkirk. The Swansea Harrier, who also runs for Dundee Hawkhill Harriers, turns 27 on 4 March and he took full advantage of the absence of reigning champion Callum Hawkins to move up from second last year to the top of the podium in 2018 as he completed the 10k course in 33 min 05 sec, to win by 24 seconds from Lachlan Oates. Welsh international Jones recovered from finding himself stuck much further back in the field than he would have liked at the start and soon moved his way to the head of affairs on a bright, crisp and sunny day at Callander Park.

Six Nations promo

Referee Glen Jackson in Dublin . . . Any Thoughts? Here’s Some. . .

As the analysts continue to pour over the video footage from last weekend’s Six Nations games, Seimon Williams from Gwladrugby has been doing his own homework on Wales’ defeat to Ireland. If you thought some of those decisions by referee Glen Jackson looked a bit strange, then you were not alone.  I’ve been following rugby for nigh on 40 years. My earliest memories of being taken to Stradey Park and St. Helen’s are of the smells of wintergreen and pipe tobacco and damp wool pullovers and sheepskin coats, and of the shouts of the crowd as old men implored their team –  among the inevitable spotting of the opposition going over the top, every time ref – to “play the referee”. We’ve previously written about the complexities of the game’s law book. The role of the referee has changed. They are now required to “manage” the game, to consider the “materiality” of any possible offences, ignoring others in the name of allowing some rugby to occur.

Carlos Carvalhal Fancies Wembley Return. . . But Without The Bans And Fines

Carlos Carvalhal would enjoy a return to Wembley – if only to erase the memories of his last trip there. The Swansea City manager – whose team host his former club Sheffield Wednesday in an FA Cup 5th round replay on Tuesday night – took the opposition to a play-off final in 2016 where they lost to Hull City. But Carvalhal has revealed he has returned to Wembley since then – for a personal hearing on an FA disciplinary charge last October.
